Virginia State Delegate: 'I Don't Believe That Disabled Kids Are God's Punishments, Period'
TPM ^ | 2.22.10 | Eric Kleefeld

n an interview with TPM, state Del. Bob Marshall (R-VA) disputed the full accuracy and context of a local news article that quoted him as saying that an increase of disabled children was a punishment from nature for abortion.

"I don't believe that disabled kids are God's punishments, period, end of discussion," said Marshall. "I have defended disabled kids. I was almost kicked out of the Republican caucus because I forced a vote on a bill, because autism parents did not get a vote in a subcommittee."

Marshall insisted that his comments had been taken out of context. (Here's the exact quote, which I read to him, and he said sounded accurate: "The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children.") However, he said, he was discussing an increased rate of birth defects, not all birth defects in and of themselves.

Thanks for sharing. The quote does appear to be accurate.

I was hoping they were wrong. I thought Marshall was smarter than that. Worse, it sounds as if he was reading, so it wasn’t a spur of the moment thought.

All that being said, I think it’s mostly unfortunate wording. Marshall is not the monster that the left and the media will portray him to be.

A completely reasonable statement.

“I don’t believe him until I see the video.”

Good of you, old chap. Is that why you just signed up here?

Interesting you should accept the spin of a college newspaper, “the original newspaper,” rather than the record of the elected official in support of the disabled.

This is the audio of his statement. As I suspected, the original quote was completely accurate.

I look forward to your apology.

With Marshall’s statement, the Left will go for a triple play.

1) Demand Palin to make some statement calling out Bob Marhsall. Last night Keith Olbermann sugguested that Trig Palin was the result of an earlier abortion Sarah had. Real classy guy, Keith Oilbermann is.

2) Call McDonnell’s attempts to rebrand the GOP as phony and how McDonnell mindlessly follows Pat Robertson.

3) Portray religious conservatives as kooks.
