Leaders are sent to the Gulags. It doesn't matter what you're leading, merely the fact that you can mobilize the sheep. Lower ranking Socialist party leaders found themselves in very bad positions in Soviet Russia in the 30s and 40s.

Oh, but they will. Just like in China and Russia where they chose wealthy individuals to keep the money flowing. That is the dirty secret that Marxists don’t repeat. Castro and Pol Pot didn’t keep some rich around and look what happened.
