On a party-line vote, the Democratically-controlled state Senate killed a bill tied to Gov. Robert McDonnellâs (R) plans for offshore oil and natural gas exploration.
Twenty-two Democrats â including all senators from Arlington County, City of Alexandria and Fairfax County â voted down a bill that would have designated 80 percent of revenue and royalties produced by drilling off the shore of Virginia for the commonwealthâs transportation trust fund. All 18 Republicans supported the measure.
While on the campaign trial this past fall, McDonnell had promoted drilling for oil and natural gas off the shore of Virginia Beach, saying, among other things, that it could bring money to Virginia for transportation projects.
Critics, including Democratic Majority Leader and Fairfax County Sen. Dick Saslaw (D-35), called McDonnellâs offshore drilling proposal ridiculous.
Saslaw, who made money running gasoline and service stations, doubted that there was easily accessible oil off the shore of Virginia. Even if oil or natural gas could be retrieved, it would be 10 years before Virginia would receive any financial benefits and long after a new source of transportation funding was needed, said the Democrat.

It will.
Imagine if they had started drilling in 1996.
Arrogance personified. May they rot in November.
Man this argument pisses me off. If they had drilled ANWR when they made this argument ten years ago, we'd be seeing the benefits now.
Election day November reminder.
Hopefully our conservative candidates here in Virginia will make this a huge jobs and security issue in the Fall.
It will. As long as they continue to deny the public and steal from them they will be gone.
Yep......and Zero wanting to acquire MORE land for the feds in ‘oil-rich’ areas that will ban drilling. And the libs are always screaming about our dependency for ‘foreign oil’. B’tards.
They’d rather let the Chinese come take it.
Tragic, they keep saying it will take 10 years to develop the oil. I remember Kerry saying that against Bush in 2004.
No good reason for this, just incredible. And we wonder why the country is in trouble.
They won’t even allow drilling in Alaska at the top of the World. My theory is OPEC funnels payoffs through “environmental” groups.
The Govenor should do what BO does, write his own legislation and “Rahm” it through or just write an executive order and do it any way.
The Dems are gonna get ‘torched” in an Oil Well blow out....did they not see, hear, believe the Governor’s Election in Virginia ?
The Revolution was not Televised ?
Saslaw has always been one of the dumbest Democrats Virginia has spawned, and I mean spawned.
There are techiques now that allow the direct loading of ships from oil rigs. That was one of the reasons the No. Vietnamese attacked the South when they did.
They were afraid that the South’s offshore oil rigs would produce enough money to help fund the military. A little known fact but I testified about this before congress in 1974.
Bastidges voted to “adjust” the fuel tax as well.

I can’t believe what gas prices have gotten back up to.
I don’t know if will happen but I sense people getting real tired of the real party of NO. People a starting to believe that the Democrats (as a party) are purposely destroying the economy and have no intention of doing anything to help people get work. I hope that not on democrat gets returned to office in the mid-terms.
Northern Virginia gasoline vendors could easily be provided with their tag numbers so they could deny them sales.
