Sen. Al Franken and 12 other congressmen signed a letter to the white house Tuesday urging President Obama to extend the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for Liberians living legally in the United States.
"For the last twenty years, Minnesota has been home to one of the largest Liberian communities in the country," said Sen. Franken. "Roughly 25,000 Liberians currently call Minnesota their home and over 1,000 of them would face deportation if we allow these protections to expire."
Since 1991, Liberians who were forced from their homes because of civil war and sought refuge in the United States have been granted either Temporary Protected Status or approved DED. This protection is currently set to expire March 31, 2010.
"It's wonderful to see Liberia making progress in rebuilding their country, but the situation there continues to be fragile," said Sen. Franken. "Liberians who have lived in Minnesota for almost two decades should not be forced to return to a country which is still in the process of becoming stable."
Ughh Great Lindsey Graham just makes me sick. I am embaressed my fellow voter in South Carolina sent that RINO back to the Senate....Al Franken well...I don’t expect much from that Libtard...
Have they assimilated? Are they working instead of feeding at the public trough? Give the 1,000 or so individuals in question hearings, and decide who we want, and who we don’t want!
There, fixed it.
Maybe it's time we both get new glasses. Although, I have to admit it is occasionally amusing when I misread things.
AFAIK....they have been productive and peaceful. You hear nothing about them in a bad light in the news....
But, when they came here, they agreed to a time frame for return. I really hope that they can stay, because they have been a positive.
My point is, I guess, that Franken couldn’t care less about these folks except for their potential votes....
As a fair solution, I propose that if we welcome them to stay, Liberia must welcome us sending them an equal number of our own home-grown inner city thugs! Or maybe RAT politicians?
Mt problem with this whole situation is...Until Franken and ACORN stole the Senate election in MN, Al had no position on this. He said nothing.
But, now that there are votes to be bought, he’s all-in for the Liberians.
Whats all this talk about deporting librarians? If you do that then who’s gonna be in the library checking books in and out and making sure...huh? Oh. Deport Liberians? Oh. Never mind.
