Early voting begins Tuesday, Feb. 16 as candidates blaze the campaign trail [Texas]

FORT WORTH -- Hoping to fire up supporters as early voting in the gubernatorial race begins today, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison kicked off a "Declare Your Independence" tour Monday, encouraging Texas voters to declare their independence from Republican Gov. Rick Perry.

Hutchison will be among several candidates casting their ballots today to bring attention to early voting. March 2, the date of the primary election, is also Texas' Independence Day.

"I'm asking for your vote and I'm asking for your help," Hutchison told a crowd of more than 40 gathered in a back room at Billy Miner's Saloon in downtown Fort Worth, where she was joined by former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, a longtime friend; U.S. Rep. Kay Granger, R-Fort Worth; and other supporters. "I will be a governor who never forgets who she works for.".......

Perry was in Plano, speaking at a 10th Amendment Town Hall meeting hosted by the Texas Conservative Coalition, a caucus in the Texas Legislature. The 10th Amendment protects states' rights.

Perry told the crowd that it's time for Texans and others to stand up for their rights.

"It is well past time for us to halt the endless intrusions into our lives, put a stop to the out-of-control spending and restore our commitment to a set of shared values: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," he said. "It's time for the federal government to be less intrusive and more respectful of the wishes of the states and their citizens."........

Meanwhile, Medina was brushing off "coordinated negative attacks" by Perry and Hutchison.

"Distract and divert is exactly what career politicians do when their record is examined and We Texans should be angry," Medina said in a written release........

Missions differ for Texas governor hopefuls

Wayne Slater, Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN – With early voting set to start today, the main contenders for governor go into the final two-week sprint on decidedly different missions.

Gov. Rick Perry would like to muster a majority in the Republican primary and avoid a runoff – saving millions of dollars and curtailing the feud that has divided the GOP.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, trailing in the polls and struggling to find a breakthrough message, could use a six-week runoff campaign to convince voters she is best suited to be the GOP nominee and ensure the party a victory in November.

Debra Medina, who ascended a wave of Tea Party populism, is scrambling to patch the damage from a controversial radio interview and keep her upstart candidacy alive.

"For one year, everybody was saying this is going to be the battle of all battles," said political scientist Allan Saxe of the University of Texas at Arlington. "It's not turned out that way." ..........

Vote early, vote often. It's the progressive mantra.

Rick Perry for Governor, Michael Williams for Senate.

No Truthers (Medina), and no Washington RINOs (Hutchison).

Early voting only give those who would cheat, the opportunity to do so. IMHO

I agree completely. With the exception of those who are deployed in service to the country, get your butt to the polls on Election Day. No exceptions, no mail-in ballots, no early voting. And please present your photo ID and voter’s registration card.

Maybe but the process is still the same so if one is inclined to cheat then they’ll do it whether during early voting or on election day.

I'm not saying we shouldn't have absentee votes (i.e. sailors at sea or deployed servicemen), that's a good thing and valid. And helping the legitimately disabled or elderly vote is a good thing as well. However, I have had discussions with some "shady characters" (that's all I can say about it) and was told that is why the Republicans 48 hour push has been so effective in the past. Those who would stuff ballot boxes, find lost ballot boxes or bring in bus loads of illegitimate voters don't know how many bus loads or ballot boxes to bring in without pushing the edge of reality, i.e. more votes than actual population. By sampling the early votes, they get a rough estimate of how many votes to “create”.

When I hear KBH say she has a plan to fix the school's problem, it sends chills up and down my spine. That's code for higher property taxes to support schools being built to teach little illegals to say "cat" instead of "gato" when a picture of the feline is displayed.

If you drive through any small town in Texas, the one new building you will see is the school. The remainder of the town can be falling down, but it's got a new school.

Here in Carrollton, I'm surrounded by new multi-million dollar schools and they are filled with mostly brown skinned kids.

Texas is school poor. We have too many schools and too many school teachers. They don't need fixing. They need to be done away with.

In Fort Bend County there are many good newcomers opposing incumbents in the Republican Primary.

Nina Schaefer against long time D.A. John Healy. Every cop and lawyer I talk to wants Healy out.

Steve Smelley against RINO James Patterson for Commissioner Precinct 4. Steve was a very conservative member of the FBISD for 10 years. Patterson has worked his entire life for the government.

Roxey Roll against Judge Brady Elliott. OK an odd name but Elliott should have been replaced years ago.

Rick Forlano against Jeff McMeans for County Court at Law #2. McMeans is not an incumbent but his daddy held this seat for years and I’m sick of people who think they should inherit the job.

I agree, I love Rick. I really liked it when he was the Campaign Manager in Texas for Mondale against President Reagan in 84. Boy what a guy!

I’m not big on Perry, but when I saw a whole bunch of Texas newspapers endorse KayBay, they blew it for me. When the print media endorses anyone, I run the other way. Simple plan that has worked for years.
Also, down ballot there are 5 propositions. Sample ballots can be found on your county’s website.
