Ex-Olympians Fleming, Flowers hurt in Biden motorcade accident (Joe Biden hates Peggy Fleming)

Vancouver, British Columbia (CNN) -- Two members of the U.S. Olympic delegation -- both gold medalists from previous Olympics -- suffered minor injuries Sunday in an accident as they were traveling in Vice President Joe Biden's motorcade, the White House said.

Peggy Fleming and Vonetta Flowers were taken to a hospital "as a precaution" after a van in the motorcade was involved in a minor accident, according to Biden spokesman Jay Carney. Both were later released from the hospital.

Neither Biden nor anyone else in the motorcade was involved in the incident, Carney said.

Joe's motorcades score again, third time in a year I think. Just guessing, but maybe the drivers stuff their ears with cotton and are continually wincing from the senseless jabber from the backseat, which would be a serious distraction of course.

And Joe's people say Joe isn't at fault. Again. So that's ok.

Advice for FR newbies:

If you are a newbie, I recommend copy-pasting this post to notepad. [It helps to remove word wrap {in ‘format’} before copy-pasting FROM notepad.]

And if you remember just one thing from this post, please remember this — get comfortable with ‘advanced google’.

You need this bookmarked / in favorites / whatever:
http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en

The easier your access to advanced google, the better. Why? Narrowed searches. A single key word is rarely even close to cutting it. You normally need to limit your search to three or more key words. But there’s more to a narrowed search.
Sometimes, you need to find pre-dated information. There are different ways to do it. I myself normally enter years in the “not this” box. But the wording in advanced google for that box is this:

- - -
But don’t show pages that have...
any of these unwanted words: [box for you type in here]
- - -

I’ll type 2010 2009 [etc.] in the “not this” to find predated information. However many years back I want to go to see how news was covered prior to the latest spin.

You might also see a lot of copy-paste rip-offs [some might call them clones], so pick out an odd key word from the ‘copy paste’. For example, I was trying to learn about the safe schools czar, and the leftwing loonies kept posting “loyal American” in their cloned defense. So I entered in the ‘not this’ box: “loyal”.

Another trick is what I think of as “leapfrog research”. First I might enter a word and ‘wacko’. Or if I’m suspcious of a website, I might add ‘sux’ or ‘sucks’ to see what people are griping about. Then, after getting basic information, I delete the “leapfrog” word and enter a specific word, such as a date, a full name, a title with the name, etc.

You can do a vanity search with google too. Type in your screen name along with freerepublic.com. You can vanity search anyone, not just yourself. You can also vanity search our forum in google [by adding the word, “freerepublic.com”] which helps you locate things in ways that the forum’s search engine might not offer. [I like to help the FR’s google engine positioning anyway.]

- - -

Profile and bookmarks

Make use of your profile and bookmarks. Even if you are the only one reading it, it can help you remember things. [Some people simply bookmark interesting reads as they go, and when their bookmark “link lists” are too long, they copy-paste them onto a notepad and purge the public bookmarks.]

You can customize your bookmarks. It would not hurt to add a [tag] to the headline for example, or to change the headline entirely if you want a different take on the article. Many professional headlines are worthless and confusing [especially the most clever and catchy ones]. You can also customize the website address. In fact, it takes a little work, but if you clear out everything in an FR bookmark, you can bookmark any web address on the internet. You can also bookmark individual posts. [Half the time, someone’s post is more valuable than the article.] Here is what I mean:

Escalante Land Grab
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2450392/posts?page=88#88

That post is about a Clinton land grab via executive order. Obama is planning on seizing more power through executive orders of his own [what the article is about]. Some might consider bookmarking the article and post seperately.

Note the end of the address: ?page=88#88. That’s the ‘magic formula’ for an address of a post. You can find it if you right click at the right spot on a post. Just after the date and time, you will see “88 of 88”. That’s the spot.

You can edit your profile in “account” [at the top menu]. You can also edit your bookmarks [or links] from there. Your profile won’t look “too hot” until you’ve learned basic HTML. But even a trashy or short profile is better than nothing. I’m like many — I don’t talk much about myself in my profile. I use it to talk about more important things. ETL’s profile is a masterpiece. I link to it sometimes:

Obama Opposition Researcher, ETL, still hard at work:
http://www.freerepublic.com/~etl
[Almost anything you’d want to know.]

Your Focus

You will find people value you more if you become a “go to” person on a given issue, a specialty, especially if you have personal life experience in that issue. [One of mine was training and supporting new-hires in fast food.] Being broad, general interest is fine too. We always need that. A combination of the two might be ideal — half specialty and half broad. Also, you might enjoy weird news. Why not collect link lists of weird news? We never laugh enough. Or you might collect thoughtful posts. People love being quoted. It lets people know they are appreciated.

Copying website addresses. The trick is to right click on the link. Then you can copy/paste the address without leaving the page you are currently on.

Flash drive: Nothing beats a flash drive for backup memory. It also helps you organise your files. Just be careful about what you delete. If you are well off, heck, why delete anything? Just bury it in junk folders.

Ping lists. It’s one thing to invite someone to a ping list. Take it from me: don’t ‘slam’ them into a ping list uninvited. For every one who complains, five are grumbling behind your back. If you see a good pinger, consider joining the list. Just tell them. Most of us pingers can’t get long enough lists. If you start a ping list, please don’t make it “high volume”. With few exceptions, one ping a day is plenty. A once-a-week ping might even be more popular. You can always post links as a follow-up to your ping.

FReeper Relations: Keep a list of screen names, especially of people FRiendly to you, and try to write down what their realm of knowledge is, what they are interested in, and what their sense of humor is like. [I wish I had done more of that all these years.] If you like someone’s post and that person hasn’t had several responses, let him/her know. All of this is well worth the time! We are, more than anything else, a human resource. On the other hand, if you think something is wrong [such as something that seems blatantly racist], I recommend private messaging a third party and ask what that person thinks [not public posting — but ‘freep mail]. As a newbie, you might not be familiar with taunts on leftists. It can be very complicated. Curmudgeon that I am, I’ve gotten into hundreds of stupid sqaubbles over nothing, sometimes simply due to sloppy reading on my part. [I need coffee when I get up but never wait for it.] Don’t confront people over perceived racism [or other harsh accusations] for your first half year or so.

- - - -

Vanities.

If you hear something breaking from an obscure news source [especially you-tube], or better yet — if you have access to an original source, then you should seriously consider posting a vanity. Don’t be put off by the word, ‘vanity’. It’s a word purposefully designed to discourage worthless threads [most vanities truly are vanity].

There are different categories of ‘vanity’.

1. Scoops or original sources — priceless.
2. Link lists — very handy. [Check out backhoe sometime.]
3. Unique observations or great humor.
4. Genuine vanity.

Unfortunately, most vanities truly are ‘vanity’. They are flops and get you nothing but grief. It’s normally someone who thinks he or she has a unique observation. Guess what? It might not be. But hey, maybe it is.

If you have a unique observation and the nerve to go for it, I recommend four things:

1. Try a google first [adding “freerepublic.com”]. See if someone had already written something along the same lines.

2. Be absolutely certain to add [Vanity] to your headline or people will be ticked off royally.

3. If it is fake news [a prank-thread], you are really asking for it. I wouldn’t advise it. Only a precious few have managed to get away with prank threads for any length of time.

4. If I were a newbie right now, I wouldn’t make more than one vanity a week for every three months I’ve been around [unless I had a hot exclusive source].

5. Write on notepad [or equivalent] and then Control + A to copy-paste. Things go wrong. Sometimes an entire thread gets yanked when only one sentence needs to be deleted or modified.

Chit-chat. Some chat belongs in private messaging [freep-mail]. [I need to follow that advice more myself.]

Jim Robinson’s vision was for our public posts to echo through eternity, to be prose and revelations that historians study thousands of years from now. It’s good to stop and ponder on the gravity of what you write here [unless it’s funny as heck]. Imagine this: your great grandchild might be reading your posts!

- - -

HTML

HTML is tricky. You already have automatic HTML in this great forum to help you with line breaks for new paragraphs, and any complete website address is automatically linked if you are posting a response to an article. But if you enter any HTML code, you need to do those things manually. Not only that, but people like to see the address anyway before clicking. One reason is that there are certain websites that lag a computer. Or they don’t think some sites are credible [such as people who have trouble spelling ‘net’ correctly].

To learn HTML, maybe this will help:
