Newspapers' poll: Perry has comfortable lead as voting starts [TxGov]

Gov. Rick Perry heads into the start of early voting Tuesday with a comfortable lead over his two Republican primary challengers, but he could be in for a tough November fight against the Democratic nominee, a poll commissioned by the Austin American-Statesman and other Texas newspapers shows.

Perry has the support of 45 percent of likely Republican primary voters, while 29 percent back U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and 17 percent support Wharton activist Debra Medina. Just 8 percent are undecided.

The telephone survey was conducted Feb. 2-10, before Medina said important questions had been raised about whether the U.S. government aided in the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Medina later said she has never believed the government was involved, but her initial remarks could weaken her momentum.

In fact, Medina's comments could allow Perry to win more than 50 percent of the vote in the March 2 primary and avoid a runoff, said pollster Mickey Blum of Blum & Weprin Associates, which conducted the survey.

Usually, incumbents don't build support in the final weeks of an election, Blum said. But Perry could break the 50 percent threshold if Medina's comments cause her supporters to break toward Perry or stay home.

Rick Perry is now certain to win his primary race for Governor. A vote for Kay Bailey Hutchison is a vote for her to continue her adoration for Anti-American, socialist POTUS Barack Obama. Now that Debra Medina has committed a fatal self-inflicted wound to herself, this race is over. While I do not care for everything that Rcik Perry does, he at least has fought the communist POTUS Obama at evey turn. Kay Bailey Hutchison whimped out and eagerly kissed the butt of the America destroyer, POTUS Barack “Hussein” Obama. Am requesting all Texas Pubbies vote for Rick Perry on primary day!!!

I can't speak for the rest of the Texans here but my vote is going to Medina. We've had enough RINOs serving the left to suit me thank you very much.

PS ▬ I wasn't polled. ;-)

my vote is going to Medina

She's a Ron Paul acolyte.

She's a truther.

She's unqualified to hold any office.

What's not to like?

Well, if Perry wins it will finish Hutchison’s career so there’s something to be glad about.

When Medina loses - will you support the GOP nominee?

Thank goodness the truther was exposed before the voting began.

Early voting is a dangerous process IMO. Too much can happen by election day that would have changed the results.

I suspect that KBH will remain in the senate.

Let the left howl. She gives us one more in numbers towards controlling the committees.

If the state of Texas votes in a dim gov in these times, they deserved to have their butts kicked like the Crimson Tide kicked the Longhorns butts. They deserved every tax raise, every big government program, every dime and nickel spending program the dims put in. After MA, NJ and VA, surely Texas cannot be that stupdi.

I see the Perry hacks are out in full force today
Never mind that Medina is not a Truther and clarified her statements.
I guess FReepers support establishment career politicians, one who used to campaign for Mondale and Gore back in the 80s
Perry is nothing more than a big-gov't conservative, Bush-lite.

Rick Perry ran Mondale’s TX campaign in 1984 - he also supported Algore’s presidential race in 1988

Did you support the firing of Van Jones?
The Obama aid that is a truther (rosie ODonell etc).
Has Medina signed the truther petition like Jones?

Medina supporters lose all credibility.

I will vote for Medina too. She is the only candidate that understands (will support) state sovereinty and the constitution.

Everyone I have talked to that knows medina personally states without hesitation that Medina is not a truther.

People bashing her on FR are taking 1 issue, that is based on 1 badly fumbled answer, on an issue that doesn’t even matter to a Governor and ignoring her statement where she denied being a truther, ignoring that she has never championed any such thing... and defining her with it. That’s exactly what was intended.

Her campaign was based on property rights and state soverignty.
