After Threat, Obama Gets His Nominees (GOP caves to another Obama lame threat!)
Fox News ^ | 2/12/2010 | WSJ

President Barack Obama dropped his threat to bypass the Senate and install nominees to their positions through recess appointments -- at least for now.

Recess appointments can be made while the Senate is out of session and are a way for presidents to get around the need for a confirmation vote. The president said in a statement Thursday evening that he is encouraged by confirmation earlier in the day of 27 high-level nominees.

On Tuesday, Obama threatened to make the recess appointments to get around senators who had placed "holds" on his nominees, which prevent, or at least delay, the Senate from moving forward with nominations. By the White House’s count, at the start of the week, 63 nominees had been stalled with holds.

At a meeting with top congressional leaders on Tuesday, Obama told Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell that he would use his recess appointment power if Republican senators did not release their holds.

They shouldn’t be obstructing his appointments. They should have a vote and not confirm them until he nominates more center of the line people.

No... they do not have the votes to do so and the dims used this for years against Bush. You are wrong... they should stay in session... the dims rotated one guy in and out to block Bush's appointments.

Obama? "Center of the line people"? Gimme a break!

Even if the Senate "rejects" an Obama candidate via filibuster, he will just wait until the Senate is not in session & put them in office anyway, won't he?

I like listening to Bolton on FOX News & I appreciate his down-to-earth talk, but w/ his being a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, I have lost a lot of trust in him. Overall, I think he is dangerous for our sovereignty as a free nation.

The GOP needs ot grow a set.

While there are some tough individual Republicans - ironically, many of them women - the GOP itself has long been a club of cowering bumblers overly concerned with how their cronies (and even enemies) perceive them.

People want and respect leaders with courage, and while the Democrats can successfully substitute a remorseless viciousness for same, the Republicans can't even manage to maintain a dirty look for more than a couple of news cycles before they let bullies like Obama steal their (and our) lunch money.

John Bolton turned out to be one of the shining stars of the Bush administration.

So, just who in D.C. is not a member of the CFR?

Welcome to FR, ChrisInAR.

Might you favor us and explain why
John Bolton is “dangerous” to US sovereignty?

Its not about getting even, its about having a spine and doing whats best for the country.

Confirming them is NOT good for the country.
Not confirming them will only lead to recess appointments.

Not voting means the country doesn’t have the necessary leadership in those positions. With the bozo in the WH we need more leadership.

It was worse than that. Remember they would open the session, gavel is closed and go home. Took all of 60 seconds of their time.

At the very least making Obama put them in via recess appointments limits their term until the next congress convenes. Now, by caving, his appointees will be in for the duration. Thanks alot Republicans!

As soon as the 'Rats took over the Senate, they started that crap. Reid would call the Senate into session, do some minor point of business, then gavel an adjournment (not a recess). They did this on holidays, Christmas and the like, just to spite Bush and circumvent his authority to do recess appointments.

The Constitution allows recess appointments. If he wants to, Obama should just go ahead and do them and stop bellyaching. He may take some flak for it but BFD, Bush and others did for years and they took it like men. But Obama has to act like the petulant child he is and whine about his opponents. If he'd just act like a man for a change and take care of business, he might get more respect than he does from those outside his circle of sycophants and groupies.

Well. if I remember correctly, Bush DID make a few recess appointments though not many. Nobody here seemed to object then except those of us who knew that a Dem Prez would do it too. The whole idea of one Senator being able to put a hold on all appointees is repugnant to me.

A recess appointment would provide an opportunity to throw them out after November. Now, they qualify for lifetime pensions, benefits, etc. from you and me.

So will any news organization ever actually name names so we know who the 29 people confirmed under this threat were or is that classified top secret?
