how is it possible, at this late date, for Obama to be this clueless?
Because he's been coddled his entire life by sycophants in the media and academia who tell him that everything he does is wonderful and that anyone who doesn't like him is racist?

If only Obama were ‘clueless in Washington’. What you perceive as a kind of mindlessness; is actually an agenda. Now, ‘power’ is another matter. . .someone does hold Obama’s chain. . .

If I’m not mistaken, when all that legislation was written by Congress, bailing out the banks and financial institutions, it was expressly written that the bonuses WOULD be given. For any Democrat Congressman or Senator, or even Obama, to decry them now, is hypocrisy, or prevarication, or both. But that wouldn’t be surprising, with that bunch.

Krugman later notes:
The point is that these bank executives are not free agents who are earning big bucks in fair competition; they run companies that are essentially wards of the state. Theres good reason to feel outraged at the growing appearance that were running a system of lemon socialism, in which losses are public but gains are private. And at the very least, you would think that Obama would understand the importance of acknowledging public anger over whats happening. [emphasis mine]
Krugman is actually right on this.
