GOP Needs to Make Case at Health Care Summit

Townhall.com ^ | February 10, 2010 | Dick Morris and Eileen McGann

Posted on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 8:01:32 AM by Kaslin

President Obama has so lowered expectations for the Republican Party that if they come to the health care summit he has called at the White House with concrete and well articulated proposals, it will blow the country away. Repeatedly, the president has fashioned the GOP as the party of "no," goading them by saying, "If you have any ideas, bring them on."

Well, let them do it.

Republicans need to be on their toes and aggressive in the meeting, and not let it devolve into a question and answer session with the president hogging the mike. He asked for a meeting, not a lecture or a media conference, and Republicans need to demand equal time to present their ideas.

SACRAMENTO (CBS 5 / AP) ― The state controller's office on Tuesday found that California taxpayers are on the hook for more state government retiree health benefits than previously thought.

Controller John Chiang's office issued a report showing the growing divide between what the state owes retirees for health and dental benefits and what it has saved so far.

The gap has grown to nearly $52 billion, about $3.6 billion over last year's estimate.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right. All right, now, back to the health care bill. February 25th -- do you intend to go to this bipartisan meeting that the president is calling and is going to have televised at the White House?

Healthcare Rope-a-Dope Plays Coming Fast ("Sham" WH summit is a "trick")

Human Events ^ | February 10, 2010 | Connie Hair

President Obama and congressional Dems are planning two big “rope-a-dope” plays worthy of Muhammad Ali to get Obama’s nationalization of healthcare passed.

First, there’s a strategy to pass amendments -- making the current Senate bill more palatable to liberals -- and have the president wait to sign it until the House passes the Senate bill.

Ryan Gets Serious (Paul Ryan’s Healthcare fix is a tough sell, but a real plan.)

The Democrats are having trouble finding enough votes to pass their health-care bill — maybe you’ve heard? The trouble stems from the bill’s many unpopular provisions: It would raise taxes, force people to buy government-approved coverage, and cut Medicare. In the aftermath of Scott Brown’s election to the Senate, the Democrats had no clear way forward. Brown didn’t just deny them a crucial 60th vote in Senate; he did it by running explicitly against the Democrats’ version of health-care reform. How can a political party enact legislation that the public simply doesn’t want?

Pelosi aide says Dems have a legislative "trick" to pass Obamacare; So why have a summit?

Washington Examiner ^ | 02/10/10 | Mark Tapscott

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's senior health care advisor has told Congress Daily that congressional Democratic leaders have settled on a strategy they believe will allow them to make changes in both Senate and House Obamacare bills, then send a single, revised version to President Obama for signature.

Congress Daily is a subscription-only publication, but LifeNews.com has these details:

"In comments reported by Congress Daily, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s top health care aide Wendell Primus admitted top Democrats have already decided on the strategy to pass the Senate's pro-abortion, government-run health care bill.

Those who believe the President's latest move toward bi-partisanship is a political "slight-of-hand" may very well be correct. In In comments reported by the subscription only Congress Daily, the most powerful Woman in the World, Nancy Pelosi’s top health care aide Wendell Primus admitted top Democrats have already decided on the strategy to pass the Senate's pro-abortion, government-run health care bill. In fact he says Obama's latest "friendly gestures" is all a trick

Colchicine Deal Unfair to Patients

Family Practice News ^ | January 2010 | EDWARD FUDMAN, M.D.

Posted on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 5:02:41 PM by neverdem

DR. FUDMAN is in private practice in Austin, Texas. He reports that he has no conflicts of interest.

The price of colchicine is increasing by 50-fold, from about $0.10 per tablet to $5 per tablet, unless physicians and patients can convince the Food and Drug Administration to allow the colchicine made by generic manufacturers to stay on the market. A twice-daily dose of colchicine will increase from $6/month to $300/month because one company has taken advantage of FDA rules and the orphan drug law to the detriment of patients.

£80m bill for obesity: Benefit claims by those too fat to work have soared under Labour

Daily Mail ^ | 8:34 AM on 10th February 2010 | Gerri Peev

Obese benefit claimants who are officially too fat to work have cost the taxpayer £80million under Labour. The number of people claiming incapacity benefit because they are obese has doubled since 1997 as ministers moved people off the dole queue and on to sickness benefit. The obese are £25 a week better off if they claim incapacity benefit rather than jobseeker's allowance.

Hokem Health Care Summitry

A couple of Washington's most familiar con jobs are now front and center of our national leaders' approaches to two of the most critical issues facing the nation. Frequently when the White House and Congress want to look like they are doing something concrete, when in fact they want to keep doing what they've been doing, they form a "bipartisan commission" or "task force" to study a problem and then recommend courses of action.

Rep. Issa: Was Obama ‘Just Lying to Congress’ on Tort Reform Pledge?

CNS News ^ | 2/9/2010 | Fred Lucas

(CNSNews.com) – In September, President Barack Obama told a joint session of Congress that his administration would look into tort reform as a means of lowering health care costs, but the administration’s Department of Health and Human Services stated in congressional staff report that medical malpractice reform is “not a priority.”

Begala: 'Republicans Want Insurance Companies to Have the Right to Dump Your Ass'

There's really little opportunity for the spirit of bipartisanship to exist when you have a part-time operative for the Obama administration/cable network political commentator throwing bombs about the GOP for not catering to the Obama administration's wishes on health care reform.

CNN political commentator and Democratic strategist Paul Begala bashed the opposition on Fox Business Channel's Feb. 10 broadcast of the "Imus in the Morning" program. He claimed the problem wasn't stubborn congressional Democrats wheeling and dealing behind closed doors on health care reform legislation but Republicans wanting to be obstructionists.
