Except for Alaska, this really comes as no surprise.

Ironic that 250 years ago the New England states were the heart of the revival.

Alaska could just be based on low population and the fact that there are less churches due to less people.

Did they poll the indiginous people of AK? I doubt it. Another lame swipe at Sarah. ;)

Satan saw it as a challenge.

But consider the surprise of Scott Brown. God is not mocked. Perhaps those states are on the cusp of another revival, God willing!

What exactly do they mean by ‘least religious’? How and what criteria did they use?

Not Washington...unless it’s on the EAST side of the state. The west side is firmly entrenched on the side of the forces of darkness.

Rhode Island is the only state in the US with a Catholic majority, with MA and CT being, I believe, the second and third most Catholic states in the union (by baptism, not church attendence). The secularization of much of the Catholic population in the northeast over the past 30 years has not been given enough attention, by either the Church or academics.

Huge as California is, there is a full spectrum of religion or irreligion to be had there, as the case may be. It is the modern equivalent of the Burned-Over District: the hotbed of, er, unique religious expressions. Left coast, yes, but they did elect Ronald Reagan governor.

Let us be fair and balanced about this.

Which States have the most religious over-the-top nuts?

Alaska does not belong on that list. Someone’s research is flawed. No quarrel with the others on the list though.

Ahhhh, the key question.

I bet they ignored Pagan, Buddhist, polytheistic, Wiccan, animistic, earth worshiping/environmental and Native American beliefs.

****************

I am not that surprised about Alaska. A small, very self reliant population whcih I believe is disproportionately young. Religion (of any kind) usually needs a fairly cohesive community to prosper.

As for the others, well, American liberalism is basically Puritanism which has abandoned God and virtue.

This list is based on responses to a Gallup Poll that asked a cross-section of Americans if religion is an “important part” of their lives. Read the “Most Religious”

If you go to:

http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=33349#

you can see that even in VT, 42% answered "yes."

They also ranked the top 10 "most religious" states and all were former members of the Confederacy.

Hmmm, I’ve prayed to God a number of times when I was in Nevada. The porcelain God, but God nonetheless.

"I’m surprised California is not in there"

Gaia, earth-mother-godess, Wiccans, satan-worhshippers, or any other 'religion' which disparages humanity would count in CA.

Global Warming is California’s fastest growing religion.

Well. Cult.
