Obama invites GOP to summit on health care

President Obama moved to jump-start the stalled health-care debate Sunday, inviting Republicans in Congress to participate in a bipartisan, half-day televised summit on the subject this month.

The president made the offer in an interview with CBS News anchor Katie Couric hours before the network televised the Super Bowl. Obama challenged Republicans, who have been largely unified in opposing his proposals, to bring their best ideas for how to cover more Americans and fix the health-insurance system to the public discussion.

"I want to consult closely with our Republican colleagues," Obama said. "What I want to do is to ask them to put their ideas on the table. . . . I want to come back and have a large meeting, Republicans and Democrats to go through, systematically, all the best ideas that are out there and move it forward."...

And did the CBS anchor ask Obama, if he thinks this is such a good idea, why Obama didn’t do this last year, when he first started working on the bill?

Of course not. They just fawned over his “bipartisanship”.

The Republican response should be interesting. IMHO, ignoring the whole thing would be the best response. Let nobama hold the meeting by himself.

The Pubs have already tried to get their ideas recognized via various amendments which were shot down wholesale.

The RATS had their chance to be “bipartisan.” Now they can go screw themselves.

What an a**hole. He was happy to lock-out the Repubs when he had 60 senate seats.

If -17bama was even remotely serious, this would have been negotiated privately (yes, in this case, behind closed doors would be appropriate), and then a joint statement with agreed on time, location, topics, goals, etc. Instead, this unilateral announcement is DOA, an obvious grandstanding aiming to blame Republicans for not attending, or blaming of sabotaging -17bamacare after attending.

I’m sure the stupid Republicans will agree to this maneuver and allow Obama to get the upper hand.

Obama can kiss ass. The Dem leadership blocked the GOP from the debate. He can now wallow in it. Maybe Harry Reid can save him.

“I want to consult closely with our Republican colleagues,” Obama said. “What I want to do is to ask them to put their ideas on the table. . . .”

And, if the GOP falls for this they don’t deserve the support of ANY conservative American.

0bama is asking the GOP to join in a discussion, starting from the current state of the proposed legislation. That is NOT a winning strategy for the pubbies.

Scrap the whole thing. That’s the only place to start. And, then work on repealing the rest of the Fed’s anti-Constitutional intrusion into the health care of the citizenry.

Oh-oh!!! The Republicans are being sucked in for the kill!!!

GOP leaders on Sunday said they welcomed the outreach, but called it evidence that Obama knows he must start over if he wants to earn their support going forward.

In a statement, House Republican leader John A. Boehner (Ohio) said that he looks forward to the discussion, and that he is "pleased that the White House finally seems interested in a real, bipartisan conversation on health care. . . . The best way to start on real, bipartisan reform would be to scrap those bills and focus on the kind of step-by-step improvements that will lower health care costs and expand access."

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) said he welcomed "the opportunity to share ideas with the president," adding that "we know there are a number of issues with bipartisan support that we can start with when the 2,700-page bill is put on the shelf."
