I can see where a shuttle astronaut may be upset at losing their federal sinecure but are they really right? Maybe instead of the bureaucracy bound, inefficient government entity that is NASA we should be promoting private industry as a replacement. Announce that we’re going to contract out flights to the space station to a private firm and see how quickly and cost-effectively they can do it. See what happens.
your cute..
by the way when you resort to calling names you have lost your argument... you lose again..
we can no more privatize the big goals NASA chases after then privitize the US Marines!
Orion is the jewel to preserve here, it will give the next president options.
No matter what comes out of this, it must be saved.
Your not interested in facts.
You have a very strong anti-NASA fetish and a near faith like expectation of commerical endeavors.
Where are th commercial space stations and moon bases if NASA sucks so much. They should have left NASA in the dust years ago.
It’s only part of the equation but that fact doesn’t register.
Obama is wrong, so are you.
It really is that simple.
Well alright! A poster on this thread who actually asks the right questions. Space-X will be launching the Falcon 9 within a few months. It’s a medium lift rocket with their Dragon capsule that has been specifically designed to accommodate astronauts. In other words, it’s man rated. The proposed launch window for the first launch starts in early March. As for Bigelow Aerospace, they have put 2 experimental capsules up already which incorporate a new technology for building habitats superior to anything NASA has up there now. The primary delay in launching follow on capsules has been lift. Once that is is available the follow on capsules will be bigger, more robust and better suited to experimentation than the ISS. Google them up. You’ll see that the privatization of space is really abut to take off.
The list, ping
Why not?
Because private enterprise isn’t in the business of positioning our nation strategically in twenty years.
They can play a part and already do! It’s nothing new, but it is not the whole ball of wax.
The kind of private exploration that is about to occur was prohibited for decades and has only recently been allowed. So there it is. Govt getting in the way of private enterprise. You seem to have a hatred for capitalism and private ownership and a love of govt bureaucracy, something rarely encountered on this website.
“You seem to have a hatred for capitalism and private ownership and a love of govt bureaucracy, something rarely encountered on this website.”
LOL
Don’t tread on me.
“Coming soon to a launchpad near you.”
No, it’s not. Certainly not to the moon.
“The kind of private exploration that is about to occur was prohibited for decades and has only recently been allowed.”
There is no “private exploration” of any real kind that is about to occur. There’s not much “exploration” to do in LEO. No private lunar missions. No private mission to Mars.
“Govt getting in the way of private enterprise.”
Government doesn’t have to. The risk/reward equation will do that nicely.
A threat?
Government regulations will keep privatization boxed in, unless like Space X they buy their own island.
The success of The United States, is a lesson the world will not forget. Colonies become independent, they become stronger and they almost always become FREE.
The governments of this world do not fear "aliens", they fear free off world humans.
NASA wasn’t going to the moon anyway and certainly not Mars. That was all PR which you apparently swallowed. The moon Mars program was underfunded, behind schedule and Ares wasn’t going to cut it. Better to let it die now instead of funding another Shuttle like budget buster.
As for “coming soon to a launchpad near you” it certainly is and you’re being willfully uninformed if you don’t know that. All you have to do is a little googling.
Obama has a broken clock moment on this one.
Agreed. There's no justification for taxpayer-funded manned space flight.
Let the enthusiasts fund their own fantasies.
“NASA wasnt going to the moon anyway and certainly not Mars. That was all PR which you apparently swallowed. “
Commercial enterprises won’t go at all. At least with some development of Orion, we’d have the equipment to go in the first place. I’ll say this again for the people in the cheap seats who do not understand this business: space exploration will NOT BE FUNDED BY PRIVATE INDUSTRY. Not for a VERY LONG TIME. The risks are too high and the rewards to low.
“As for coming soon to a launchpad near you it certainly is and youre being willfully uninformed if you dont know that. All you have to do is a little googling.”
I’m an aerospace engineer. I’m fairly current on the goings-on in my own damn field. Falcon9/Dragon is not going to be a vehicle for space exploration. We’ve already explored LEO. Sorry to burst your bubble.
