Police are engaged in a standoff outside the residence on 38th Street in Missoula where a kitten was found earlier this week, the victim of a savage attack.
Dore Lane is closed off to keep people away from the area.
The first 9-1-1 call came from a Missoula police officer who reported a shot had been fired at the house, but not by officers. That call came around 1:30 p.m. today.
Officers and SWAT team members have congregated outside the apartment. A special operations police vehicle is approaching the home carefully, trying to determine what is happening inside.
There is no information available at the present time about who is inside the house, or how this incident began.
The residence has been in the news this week after police were called to the home with a report of screams on Sunday night.
There, officers found a limp and near-dead kitten.
The 4-month-old kitten's owner had allegedly tried to drown her in the toilet, and apparently had thrown the animal against the wall or stomped on its back, crushing the pelvis. Part of the cat's head was shaved.
The animal was later euthanized.
The kitten's owner, Gary Bassett, has not been charged with any crimes, but is the focus of an ongoing police investigation.

The "Troubled Youth" who tortured and injured one of my cats ended up in prison. As usual, he moved on to doing it to people.
I hope someone mails him a rope.
Disclaimer: I am not some PETA Nut who trivalizes Human Life and values it over that of an animal.. I just recognize that it takes a special person to savage a 5 pound trusting animal, that's all.
They just updated the story and Bassett committed suicide.

I just barely caught it on the news, but in Seattle a few days ago there was a standoff with some guy. They had blocks blocked off, the swat team in all their gear, cops all over, helicopters, etc.
Somehow the guy got out of the house and escaped. (Perhaps he was never there?) Anyway, the cop talking to the press said “It seems the subject has left the area, and there is no search in progress. However, he is not deemed a danger to the public, but he does have a warrant out for his arrest.” What the Heck!?
I guess he realized he wasn’t going to play for the Eagles
