New questions in 2005 arrest of Democratic lieutenant governor nominee [IL]
Chicago Tribune ^ | February 03, 2010 | David Heinzmann and Ray Long

The newly minted Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor said Wednesday he doesn’t think a 2005 domestic battery arrest should hurt him in the fall general election, although records in the case raise questions about his version of events.

Scott Lee Cohen, a pawnbroker who was the surprise winner in the little-publicized contest among half a dozen candidates, had previously disclosed the arrest. He described it Wednesday as an argument with his drunken girlfriend and said he didn’t lay a hand on her, though she called the police and had him taken into custody.

But the official police and court records show that the woman alleged Cohen put a knife to her throat and pushed her head against the wall.

In their October 14 arrest report detailing the complaint from the 24-year-old woman, Chicago police noted they observed “mild abrasions from knife wound” on her neck. They also noted “minor scars on her hand from her trying to defend herself against the arrestee swinging the knife at her.” The report notes the woman was seen by ambulance personnel but not taken to a hospital.

The case was dropped a month later when the woman did not show up for a court date.

Also, public records show that the alleged victim, Scott’s 24-year-old girlfriend at the time, was a prostitute. Six months before the October 2005 incident, she had been arrested after a police investigation of a Glenview massage parlor. She later pleaded guilty to a charge of prostitution.

Through a spokesman Cohen said he did not know at the time that the woman was a prostitute and that she had told him she worked as a “massage therapist.”

The Governor and Lt. Governor run on a single ticket . . this would destroy any chance of the Dems winning this seat, I think

"But it isn't shutting up Geert Wilders. He's screening Fitna next month in Great Britain, which will test their laws."

"Afterall, he continued, I'm a Democrat and this is Illinois, for chrissakes."

Well, if Ted Kennedy and Marion Barry can be reelected, I’d say Cohen’s chances are pretty promising.

What a surprise, the victim didn’t show for the trial.

Heh... I didn’t pay much attention to the RAT primary for Lt. Governor but I’d love to see Pat Quinn’s face knowing he’s gonna stuck campaigning with this guy until November. And as one freeper noted, Cohen’s resume is 44 years old and his educational background is “earned a GED”. Hmmm. The Illinois RATs sure picked some gems, didn’t they? Aside from taking out Stroger, the Crook County Board Chairman, the RATs seemingly went with the weakest choices for every office (Quinn, Cohen, Alexi Corrupti, Dan Seals, etc.) My favorite is the dummycrats actually helping our chances of taking out Bill Foster by crossing over to vote for Randy Hultgren because Ethan Hastert had been endorsed by Cheney and Gingrinch. For the first time in a decade I’m optimistic about our chances in Illinois

Freepers across the nation should be pressuring Dillard to concede and for the IL GOP to announce the Brady/Plummer ticket as our official nominees.

I was looking at the discussion on OurCampaigns and the libs were in horror... like 1986 all over again, they were saying. This time with Cohen playing the role of Michael Fairchild, the LaRouchie who unexpectedly got the Lt Gov nomination over the favored George Sangmeister (State Senator and future Congressman). You’ll recall that Adlai Stevenson 3d refused to run with Fairchild and bolted the ticket and formed the “Illinois Solidarity Party”, losing to Jim Thompson again.

Yeah, I think Stevenson sealed his fate when he had all the “official” party backed Democrats switch to a third party slot on the ballot so he didn't have to run with the LaRouchies. He would have been better off just ignoring them and having the state Democrat party delete all reference to the Lt. Governor and Secretary of State races.

This is swwet.

I had that same thought, 1986.

“No Candidate” for Governor and the the LaRooshie for LT got over 6% of the vote. Funny. Some rats didn’t know how not to just vote a straight ticket.

Blago didn’t wanna run with Quinn. Now Quinn knows how that feels and then some.

This guy Cohen came out of no where. One day I started seeing his seeing his signs outside and his ad on tv which I mostly tuned out, all I recall is some guy saying “I’m voting for Scott Lee Cohen”. He’s a “a pawn broker and cleaning supply distributor”. I had no idea who would win the race. It was so wide open.

Senator Terry Link whom I glad didn’t run for the 10th CD came in dead last after some unknown named Castillio. I guess he’s less formidable then I thought.

I earned a GED too. Maybe next time I should run for LT Governor. I can certainly handle the nonexistent duties!
