Winter Storm Update

Posted 01/28/10 12:45 pm
Producer: Kevin King

Freezing rain is falling in eastern Oklahoma as a powerful winter storm system is moving in to make things a mess over the next few days.

The white is the snow band, the pink is the ice band
and the green and/or yellow is the rain band.

The precipitation didn't start falling in the Tulsa area until around noon. Already, there are slick spots reported in Creek County and that is expected to be the case soon in Tulsa and surrounding areas.

In western Oklahoma, roads were already slick and hazardous with many accidents reported.

Expect sleet and/or freezing rain for most of the afternoon and evening Thursday and a changeover to snow by late Thursday or early Friday, with snowfall amounts of four to six inches possible through the Interstate 44 corridor and heavier amounts to the northwest.

The heaviest of the freezing rain appears as if it will be in Creek County, where more than a half an inch of ice accumulation could be expected. That could cause power outages which could last for days.

McAlester and areas to the south are expected to see only light ice accumulations and snow.

In Tulsa, the Emergency Operations Center is set to open at 2 p.m. and the mayor and other city and county officials are to have a media briefing at 3 p.m. We will bring that briefing to you live on NewsChannel 8 and here on KTUL.com.

We’re suppose to get it late tonight and tomorrow here in Arkansas. I may get to try out my brand new Honda electric generator, although I’d gladly pass up the opportunity.

My cousin lived in Fort Smith about ten years ago when the ice storm caused them to lose power for about two weeks.

I remember that ice storm of 2000 very well. Back to back ice storms within a week. We were without power over a week ourselves. I swore after that I’d never be all electric again and never be without a generator. The limbs breaking from the large oak trees in our yard sounded like rifle shots going off. Made us a nervous wreck that first night running back and forth through the house with flashlights afraid our house was about to be crushed by those falling oaks. Thankfully just the limbs broke and kept the trees themselves from toppling over, like many we saw elsewhere.

You were saying ...

What! you mean it is colder than usual?

Well, I remember back in the 70s and 80s it was colder than it had been for the last 20 years, so it did warm up during that period of time. There were warmer winters and less "Silver Thaws" than there had been before.

But, now, it's turned, back to the colder winters, once again. It's related to us being in a Dalton Minimum-type of period (with the Sunspots) and how that affects the radiation from outer space in "cloud formation"...

That's what is causing this recent downturn and colder winter weather that we're having... and it's the cosmic radiation being able to reach the earth easier, from the solar winds being slower than normal. The cosmic radiation is the main factor in cloud formation and that's what causing the cooler weather recently.

Oh, crap. We’re north of Dallas, and it looks like we are in this storm’s sights! :-o

I’d better hit the grocery store before it hits, in case we get iced in!

Everyone being affected by this weather, prayers going up for safety!

Well now... I have to mention the great Oklahoma Ice Storm of December 2007 as the biggie here... :-)

That was one that caused almost one million people, in the State of Oklahoma, to be without power (some for weeks) and was billed as the worst ice storm in the history of the state of Oklahoma...

I would have to go back and dig up my posts on that one, if I can find them... :-)

You were saying ...

I’d better hit the grocery store before it hits, in case we get iced in!

The last two days around here, everyone was hitting all the stores... It was very strange, as yesterday was a clear blue sky, temperatures up to 60 degrees and everyone was rushing the stores to get supplies on such a beautiful day.

But, we had all be told this was coming since Monday... :-)

Reporting in from the Elk City area. Rain began about 6 AM, turned to sleet about 8 AM and as been sleeting steadily ever since. Total ice about 1/4 in so far, no snow yet.

Stay nice and warm. I hope we can.... as long as the power doesn’t go off. But, even if the power does go off... we’ve still got gas heat that works without electricity... :-)

I’m in Asheville, NC and we are hearing we could get up to ten inches of snow out of this system. Just hope the power stays on.
