Over the past fortnight people from around the world have donated time, money and goods to the victims of the horrible earthquake in Haiti.
A host of actors and other famous public figures in the United States held a telethon recently to raise money for the victims in Haiti.
One of them was retired boxing champion Muhammad Ali, who released the following statement:
By any name, charity can bring the people of our planet together. Charity changes lives and saves lives. We call upon all the good people in every corner of the world to help. Please give now. In my life Ive been called by many names. There are many names for the charity of the people of the earth and one of them is Zakat.
There is just one problem with Alis gesture: it isnt true.

It seems to be an acceptable situation these days that money raised for things like this gets ripped off and no one does a thing about it. It will be interesting to see where the money goes this time.
The link is not working.
I keep telling people this and they are always amazed. Some libs get mad at me for saying Islam is an inferior religion, but it IS.
The bible says Give to the poor, whomever they are.
Muslim charities definately favor muslims.
“Muslim charities definately favor muslims.”
Muslim charities principally fund Jihad. That’s what “zakat” is for.
Not even.
Muslim charities favor Jihad.
Disasters in muslim lands(Tsunamis, Earthquakes, famines, etc)STILL rely upon World Vision, Samaritans Purse, Operation Blessing, The International Red Cross, Israel, and the Good Ol' USA to help them out!
This is correct. If you look on page 272 of Reliance of the Traveler: A Classic Manual of Islamic Sacred Law,” one of the eight destinations of zakat is to THOSE FIGHTING FOR ALLAH.
The book explains what this means:
The seventh category is those fighting for Allah, meaning people engaged in Islamic military operations for whom no salary has been allotted in the army roster (O: but who are volunteers for jihad without remuneration). They are given enough to suffice them for the operation, even if affluent; of weapons, mounts, clothing, and expenses (O: for the duration of the journey, round trip, and the time they spend there, even if prolonged. Though nothing has been mentioned here of the expense involved in supporting such peoples families during this period, it seems clear that they should also be given it).
This passage, from this widely-used Shariah text seems to have been written expressly about zakat payments to charities which have funded Al Qaeda, HAMAS, Hezbollah and the Taliban. Note from the passage that such payments are meant specifically for irregular forces who are not part of any army roster, which describes terrorist/guerilla/insurgent groups exactly. Note that they are meant for Islamic military operations and not secular groups (i.e. HAMAS and not the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command). Note that such payments are made even if the recipient is affluent like Osama Bin Laden. And, finally, the families of fighters are to be taken care of, such as payments by Saddam Hussein and Saudi princes to families of Islamikaze bombers in Gaza and the West Bank.
All too often, the destinations of zakat payments are to Jihadists, simply because Shariah mandates it.
Arab nations weren’t donating, so he’s calling on his Muslim brothers to donate.
Was this before or after the Obama’s gave their ‘donation’?
“There is just one problem with Alis gesture: it isnt true.
The population of Haiti is overwhelmingly non-Muslim. Zakat is forbidden to be given to non-Muslims.
One can reference Reliance of the Traveler: A Classic Manual of Islamic Sacred Law for confirmation of this. This passage is from Book H Zakat on page 274:
h8.24 It is not permissible to give zakat to a non-Muslim
In encouraging others to give to charity to help those in need in Haiti, Ali was doing good work perhaps. But zakat is actually quite different from what we in the West understand charity to be. Most importantly, zakat donations cannot go to non-Muslims. If a Muslim wishes to help the overwhelming majority of the Haitian quake victims, they will have to do so outside of the system of zakat, despite what Ali says.”
