Every President tries to be re-elected as long as he is eligible. The only recent cases of Presidents voluntarily not running again are Calvin Coolidge in 1928, Harry Truman in 1952, and Lyndon Johnson in 1968, and each of them had served part of an earlier term before the one they were elected to.

The media will be determined not to let a Republican win in 2012, and I expect Obama's team to use the same sorts of dirty tricks they used to ensure his victories in Illinois (destroying the opposition candidates).

You’re right about state-run media. I do think they’re getting fed up a bit now though. If you read the questions from the press conference, they really tried to nail Gibbsy down on the 40% tax exemption for unions. The reason is a lot of these network people have the same Caddy plans and aren’t exempt. They are not happy and THAT will be what ultimately causes then to begin to question “the one”.

His younger son died in 1924 during the previous election campaign. That may have been a major reason why he didn't run again but maybe not the sole reason.

Coolidge died suddenly in Jan. 1933--before the next Presidential term ended, so he would have died in office if he had been re-elected in 1928. (Of course, the pressures of office might have brought his death sooner--just as LBJ might have died in office if he had been re-elected in 1968 rather than two days after that term ended.)
