Arkansas Democrat Snyder Retiring (Rats jump ship)
Real Clear Politics ^ | 1/15/2009 | Kyle Trygstad

Arkansas Rep. Vic Snyder announced today he will not seek re-election this year, joining several other Democrats from moderate districts who are opting out of tough re-election campaigns.

Snyder, first elected in 1996, never won re-election with less than 58 percent. In 2008 he was not even challenged by a Republican, while John McCain won 54 percent in the district to President Obama's 44 percent -- an increase from 2004, when George W. Bush won by just a 51-48 margin.

In Arkansas, Democrats hold three of four House seats, both Senate seats and the governor's mansion. However, McCain carried the state with 59 percent, and Sen. Blanche Lincoln is in for the re-election battle of her career.

Snyder's 2nd District is surrounded by the state's three other districts and includes the capital city of Little Rock.

Another recent thread indicated that he was in trouble in his district.

A nw AR area newspaper comment headline said that Lincoln won’t even visit the area, apparently because she thinks any visit would be hopeless to her re-election chances.

The bitter pill of the 2008 election is looking better and better. At least it is shaping up to do the job Nancy failed to do — Clean up the House [and some of the Senate] in 2010 and possibly 2012.

Lincoln had private meetings with a select group of people in our area over chicken houses and a plant. She is a little late. Gov. Jindal took care of Louisiana months ago while Lincoln was at home in Virginia where she actually lives with her husband and twin sons. That left Arkansas in the dust. She is trying to make up for it NOW but it AIN'T working!

It's a real shocker that Vic isn't running again, but this is excellent news.

He won't be hitting the unemployment line, since he does have his medical and law degrees to fall back on.

In typical coward dem fashion, he tucks tail and runs declaring defeat even before the war over his reelection begins. Excellent.

Does this make him a quitter like Sarah Palin?
Actually, I know the answer: Snyder is a coward and a quitter....and on a personal level, a real azzhole...

Yep, the little ole girl from Arkansas is quite at home in D.C. She should have spent more time here rather than assume she knows better than Arkansans what's good for us. Hope she has enough money saved up to support her life syle there.

Arkansas is going to send her packing.

IIRC, Snyder was one of the Representatives who was doing the phone-in townhalls, rather than face-to-face confrontations.

It seems his constituents are responding in kind.

I’ve always wondered how Snyder held on in that district. He never even made the pretense of being a Blue Dog. He was a social liberal and an economic moderate in a state that doesn’t go for that.

The Dems have an extensive bench in that district but I doubt any of them want to make that move this year.
