Cold snap pummels unequipped Europe

Europeans in the grip of one of the toughest cold snaps in decades are worried about freezing to death in their unequipped homes, as much of the continent continues to experience a Canadian-style deep freeze.

Polar wind is sweeping across Europe, from Spain to Sweden, but people in the U.K. are in panic mode as temperatures plummet to -22 degrees Celsius. It's just five degrees shy of a record set in northern Scotland in 1982.

The government has ordered manufacturers and other corporations to stop using natural gas so that there will be enough to heat homes.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown told citizens they should keep as warm as possible.

The roads are treacherous because municipalities have already run out of the salt that was supposed to last them the entire winter.

Officials are being left to pick and choose which roads will be cleared and which will be left frozen. It's left a slippery mess for cars and pedestrians to struggle through.

Parts of the Netherlands have already run out of salt, and workers were seen Friday shovelling scented bath salts onto roads in efforts to clear ice.

Some parts of rural Britain saw so much snow, they have been cut off from supplies and their animals are freezing to death because they are used to mild winters -- or suffocating to death because of roofs that collapse under the weight of snow.

The lack of preparedness is absolutely stunning.

Apparently the entire country of France takes the month of August off and heads down to the southern coast to escape summer. The french well being the french leave their unwanted baggage (old folks) back in their non-air conditioned homes to roast.

I don’t mean the people freezing but rather the politicians deserving to look stupid.

Chicken. Why back off? Don't the people deserve the government they elect?

But I have not always had central air. And it often gets well over 100 degrees here.

What is it about France that makes people die? French people? :)

The lack of preparedness is absolutely stunning.

Actually saw a video about the gritters in England (salt trucks) were they interviewed someone who claimed that they had filled their storage buildings during the summer with as much salt as the buildings could possibly hold. Me thinks the locals were on to the MET lies. This snow fall however has been historic and they plum ran out. They will need to expand the winter time logistics to cope with the Global Cooling, if the weak magnetic activity on the sun continues.

Instead of spending billions on Global Warming nonsense, they should have invested in snow plows.

Look closely. Eastern and North Eastern coast of Ireland appears to be snow covered. My guess is Ireland will eventually be covered also. The water in the area is now turning cold. The Central Atlantic is also now starting to turn cold.

IIRC, that was France, and I think 10,000? died, most old folks.

On second thought, don’t they have socialized health care? 10,000 old people dying was probably seen as a good thing.

They couldn't get their hybrid-electric snow plows started.

Very good illustrations. Personally I think our civilization peaked back when we landed a man on the moon. Been going down hill ever since then. Europe is held up as the model civilization that the US Progressives want to follow. And its crumbling before our eyes.

Perhaps if they didn't drive those puny little toy cars and something more along the lines of...

I'm just sayin...
