Salazar gets White House OK for run ( Colorado Governor )
The Denver Post ^ | 01/06/2010 | Michael Riley

The White House would not object if Interior Secretary Ken Salazar chose to resign his cabinet post and run for Colorado governor...

The White House's stance on whether Salazar can leave the cabinet on good terms is a key variable in the race to replace Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter, who announced this morning that he would not seek re-election.

I can’t decide if this is good news or not. Salazar is at least tied to the Obama administration which is getting to be about as popular as the plague. However Ritter was a guaranteed loss since he’d done such a horrible job.

Salazar is a pretty savvy sort, and will not hold back on any sleeze to get elected. I worked a bit back on the Coors campaign that ran against Salazar, and Coors lost pretty much purely on getting tarred with sleeze.

Sounds like another “strategic resignation” for the Democratic Party. Get the damaged goods out, put in a new face in hopes that it will swing the numbers enough to hold the seat for the party.

It also sounds - it being “White House Ok” - very Politburo-ish. I have no doubt Rahm or Obama have had a hand in planning and picking the chosen replacements for at least some of these Democrats resigning.

Salazar has become the Obama lackey in the destruction of high-paying oil and gas jobs in Colorado. In fact, today he announced more strict regulations on oil and gas leases on BLM land. I think he is not in the same position to run as a phony moderate who's concerned with Colorado. He's just another Washington boy now.

Salazer is part of the problem with the water issue here in CA. Would not be sad to see him go.

I said this yesterday. These retirements are NOT Rats jumping from a sinking ship. In every case there is at least a viable alternative waiting to jump in. And they don’t have the baggage of the incumbent. This is strategy. The Rats have a deep bench.

In my opinion, Ritter is dropping out due to the fall-out surrounding his involvement in the corey voorhis trial.

Salazar is an open-borders, sanctuary advocate. I don’t think his chances are all that good.

They are parachuting guys with dismal ratings and bringing in fresh faces to hold those seats. It may save a few Democratic seats in a Republican year.

Bring that phoney cowboy hat back here bit**. Salazar is tainted now. The Post can shill for him all they want. It will be a tough race, but the Dems are not as well oiled a machine as they would like to be. Andrew Romanoff is throwing a wrench in things mightily. How the Dems handle Romanoff vis a vis Bennett is dicey. It's also dicey to try and predict who ELSE the dems have to contend with to decide if Salazar being annointed by Rahm and Barry is ok.

The Dems are assuming that the Cory Voorhis tempest stops at Ritter's door. I don't think it does. I think it permeates the entire statewide party.

It's a good thing for them that the COGOP is as terminally screwed up as it is or this election year might be a real problem for them.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if some real leadership would arise out of the foothills/Western Slope/Eastern Plains and decide to really go to war with the Dems? If the GOP would spend some real money here and go Conservative it might change a newly Blue/Purple state Red for a good long time.

Regards,

TS

Salazar carries lots of baggage. He really dumped on Colorado when he was Attorney General. His election was based on a very large Hispanic and illegal population in Denver. The economy has adjusted that advantage against him. Scott McGinnis who is the likely Republican Candidate is very popular and knows Salazar very well. This will be a race and Colorado has a history of returning to conservative roots every time the Democrats spend them into poverty.

Agreed. He’s the last person we need as governor, but he has name recognition and he was pretty popular even among some “Republicans” - obviously not conservatives.

Coors lost because he was a total neophyte who was out of his league against a pure political animal like Salazar. That was the Dubya White House that insisted on running him over Bob Schaffer. Schaffer could’ve beaten Salazar in ‘04.
