DNA Breathing Dynamics in the Presence of a Terahertz Field
arXiv.org via Med Gadget ^ | January 4, 2010 | B S Alexandrov

Posted on 01/05/2010 5:23:28 AM PST by CholeraJoe

We consider the influence of a terahertz field on the breathing dynamics of double-stranded DNA. We model the spontaneous formation of spatially localized openings of a damped and driven DNA chain, and find that linear instabilities lead to dynamic dimerization, while true local strand separations require a threshold amplitude mechanism. Based on our results we argue that a specific terahertz radiation exposure may significantly affect the natural dynamics of DNA, and thereby influence intricate molecular processes involved in gene expression and DNA replication.

I know this is probably too much science but terahertz fields are what are used in the body scanners being installed in airports. This report would indicate that there exists the possibility of DNA damage from the scanners.

Med Gadget has a good explanation.

We all live in a Terahertz field, that big yellow orb up in the sky is to blame.

So it’s likely there’s a reason tetrahertz radiation is hard to generate. It’s very mutagenic.

Maybe that’s why we all have chunks of DNA that repairs radiation damage.

The atmosphere is almost completely opaque to the tetrahertz range.

“...linear instabilities lead to dynamic dimerization...”

Possible new tag line.

We all live in a Terahertz field, that big yellow orb up in the sky is to blame.

Not a problem.

1) The atmosphere is basically opaque to submillimetre band radiation, which is why the telescopes that operate in this range (primarily studying the 10-20 Kelvin dust that permeates our galaxy) all have to be placed on mountains at high altitude, on high-altitude balloons, or in space. By the time natural SMB radiation gets to the surface, it's almost completely blocked.

2) The proportion of solar radiation that is made up of terahertz range radiation is actually pretty small, compared to total radiative output. This would make 1/r2 diminishment relatively more effective for this range than for more predominant frequencies of the EM spectrum radiated from the sun, such as the visible and UV. By the time the terahertz stuff gets here, it's already pretty attentuated.

The sun is not nearly the terahertz source that one of these airline scanners would be.

I believe the technology being used for full body scanners is “millimeter wave radiation” which is somewhat lower in f than “terrahertz radiation”.

Long time misread on my part for I had been reading it as “tetrahertz” for years.

Nah. It’s “terahertz”. It’s like when you fall and hit the ground so that it’s painful.

on a more encouraging note, the UK Press is reporting this AM that the images produced by these scanners violate Child Porn Laws in most countries...
