Threats Against Soldiers May Become Felonies in SC

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina lawmaker plans to introduce a bill that would make it a felony to threaten violence against military members or their families because they are serving their country.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the proposal would make the threats a felony with up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Rep. Chip Limehouse says he came up with the bill after authorities accused an Army major and psychiatrist of killing 13 people and injuring 30 at Fort Hood in Texas in November.

The Charleston Republican says he wants to create another layer of protection for American soldiers and their families, who should never feel threatened on this country’s soil because of their service.

Another feel good law that will turn around to bite us in the ass. The next time Rush criticizes a soldier for lying about war crimes he’ll be accused of committing a felony.

You would think that this would come under the heading of treason, sedition or sabotage. Which use to be handled with a short rope and a long drop.

Me neither. Sounds like totalitarianism to me. You will not threaten a military member, or you go to jail for 10 years. What does that mean? If you get into a fight with a guy, dont know hes in the military, do you go to jail for ten years?

Isn’t threats and intimidation are already a felony in most places. This hardly seems necessary.

They ought to do it.

Al Shabab (Somalia) is actually targeting not only returning-from-Afghanistan/Iraq UK servicemen ON BRITISH SOIL, they are particularly going after "SNIPERS", and they are particularly going after THE FAMILIES OF SNIPERS, after then men return from duty.

They must have plants in the UK Defence Ministry able to track who has done what, where, and then where they are when they return home. Chilling. It could come to the USA.

“I don’t like this one bit.”

Me either.

The way we’re headed, it won’t be long until the American soldier is not the friend of freedom-loving Americans. (You can argue this until you turn blue, I know the hard-left can and will make it happen with power, enough time, conditioning and perhaps a false flag operation, or two, later on.)

This will be used by the left eventually.

Yet more proof that the right has yet to learn that government is inherently evil and needs to be stopped from growing like a cancer.

Let me spell it out for you: Whatever power over your life you hand to the right will be wielded by the left eventually.

SHRINK THE GOVERNMENT, DON’T GROW IT, FOOLS!

I don’t either. We don’t need another protected class of people, I don’t care what the reasons are. Equal protection under the law for all. This is just not right. If the federal government must provide this, the states must as well.

All this stuff does is create victim classes, special classes, and leave others without the ‘extra’ protection of whatever special classes there are. It is ridiculous.

Our constitution guarantees equal protection under the law yet we have these pandering political numbskulls openly violating this principle. Crimes are crimes. It isn’t any worse if it happens to you or me. The fact that each case has different circumstances, these are taken into account by a jury or a judge assigned to that particular case. These blanket laws that create special protected classes have to end.

They don’t need intel to find out who the snipers are, they just need to read the newspaper:

How about letting the soldier punch the offending party in their snozz and be done with it?

A little prosecutorial discretion can be good thing if the offending party deems it necessary to press charges.

“A little prosecutorial discretion can be good thing if the offending party deems it necessary to press charges.”
Unfortunately, most of the time prosecutorial discretion is only used to make things more convenient for the prosecutor and has nothing to do with justice.

Limehouse is a frikin’ idiot! Hasan wasn’t just “accused”, he was observed by many while he killed and injured so many people. Saying accused in this case is like saying alleged, when everyone knows the perp did the deed.

Found this at Slate.com from 2001:

--April 19 Associated Press story reporting that a subcommittee of the South Carolina legislature approved a bill requiring the governor to replace a U.S. senator who doesn't complete his term with a person from the same party. Limehouse is chief sponsor of the bill.

This guy seems to like being the sponsor of stupid and useless bills.

How about just making it a felony to threaten ANYONE with violence?

Why just judges, homosexuals, minorities, police, ...
