It's been two decades since New York City was held hostage to violent crime -- murder especially. All that's changed, and therein lies a lesson for those charged with protecting America from Islamist terror. This year's 461 murders through last Sunday promises the lowest mark since record-keeping began in 1963. Overall crime dropped 11 percent since 2008, with murder down 19 percent. And it's been a while since 2,200 homicides a year was considered the norm. None of this happened by itself.
If not for the focus, determination, vision and courage of certain men -- and one in particular -- New York's last 20 years would have been much bleaker and far bloodier. The city was all but out of control by the late '80s -- depressed, demoralized and fully at the mercy of homicidal urban terrorists. A few politicians -- then-Council Speaker Peter Vallone, notably -- pushed hard for hiring more cops. In Albany, Govs. Mario Cuomo and then George Pataki saw to the construction of more prisons. Then came Rudy Giuliani, to provide critical mass. He had the vision to understand that New York City needn't submit indefinitely to the criminals -- and the courage and bullheadedness necessary to do something about it.
That Mayor Bloomberg chose to continue those policies -- by then largely uncontroversial -- speaks well of him. The results speak for themselves. Contrast this with Washington's flaccid response to radical Islam's continuing assault on America. Not only does President Obama recoil from waging war on terror, he can scarcely bring himself to utter the phrase. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano's stupefying assertion that the Christmas Day terror attack over Detroit was an example of the system "working"

While a tad to the right of Obama, Giuliani is not the poster boy for crime prevention and gun rights (which go hand-in-hand). Why he was even considered (for a minute as a front runner) for the GOP presidential nomination shows that we hit a modern bottom that, thankfully and hopefully, we are on our way up from as a movement.
The N.Y.C. murder rate contniues to decline even though gun ownership skyrocketed in the states that Bloomberg blames for New York City’s crime. Fascinating.
I hope that he, and Giuliani, are learning that New York City can do amazing things when its politicians learn to pull up their own diapers, rather than running to mommy federal government to do it for them.
We might disagree with a some of Rudy’s domestic views but
the usual knee jerk reaction to his name doesn’t change the fact that he did cleen up NY from the skuzzy street activities to major crime.
Also on 9/11 and the days and weeks after, Rudy was on the pile, in the streets, and doing leadership in a city that was attacked by the enemy.
Rudy is also hated by some on FR because he knows first hand who the enemy is and knows we must win this war.
Maybe President Palin can appoint Rudy to run Homeland Security.
cleen = clean
Please tell me you’re joking. Rudy would attempt to ban guns immediately (except those he’s carrying and that those who guard him 24/7 carry).
No, some hate him because he's a filthy, GIANT government RINO that is everything wrong with the GOP and DNC. McShame is to the right of Giuliani, as is about 1/2 of the DNC.
I guess it is hard with dear leader, the NeoLeftist Ron Paul said were were attacked because we are occupiers and Imperial America ,Also leave Iran alone.
Another America hater like Obama
I agree!
The problem is Obama is a Muslim.
Just like the left and Obama; run out of argument and go to name calling. While we're at it; how many holidays did you spend fighting this war? Oh, I see.
I love this country and I agree that we should have went to war with Afghanistan after 9/11. However, I think we should have went in, whooped @$$, and then left with a warning that we would return if they rebuilt THEIR OWN NATION that we didn't agree with. Nation building with a people that hate us is absolutely stupid and Iraq was the greatest example of foreign policy ADHD that we've ever engaged in.
Giuliani is everything that is wrong with the GOP. He agrees with very little of the platform and is a piece of garbage as a human being overall.

Homo sapiens is the only animal that voluntarily does this to himself.

We aren’t fighting a WWII type enemy anymore.
Might want to stop by Camp Pendleton
here in San Diego or where the SEALS train here, and some of the other dozens of bases here and find out how they are training to fight and deal with an enemy that ain’t your 1942 or 1968 enemy.
Or, how about the 10'th Special Forces Group that share the land with us here in Fort Carson. Don't tell me who we are fighting; I just returned from fighting them in August! What you're being fed isn't the same as what we are dealing with. We are trying to nation build and they are picking us off one-by-one due to Bush's rules of engagement continued by Obama. But, this argument didn't start with our war in Iraq; it started with somebody praising a liberal named Giuliani who is nothing short of everything wrong with the GOP. So he's a hawk, who cares? Thank God he never got into the presidency because he would have ruined us just as bad as McCain would have, maybe worse.
Was afraid from Day 1 that muslims will be muslims and in the end side with muslims against the Infidels as no doubt will happen.
ROE, If the PaulBots had their way, there would be no engagement period. A surrender to the IslamOfascists.
My several Marine relatives and AF Intel understand why we must win.
My several Marine relatives and AF Intel understand why we must win.
Bud, I respect your opinion and, although not a "PaulBot," Dr. Paul possesses more intel in how to win the War on Terror than you. And, having been there and witnessed what's really going on, and being still active-duty and aware of the fight we're in (or, lack thereof due to Bush's/Obama's rules of engagement), I can tell that you have very little clue in what you are talking about. Besides, I would rather not go in at all unless we are allowed to go in, win with overwhelming force, and then leave the state building to the State Department.
I will let you get by with the “Bud” as I have a sense of humor but most women past 60 don’t
