I drove an Adams class destroyer (1200 lb. steam propulsion) back in the 80s, and wish I was 20 years younger.

Which one? I did a few years on the Hoel (DDG-13) in the early 70s. Great little ships.

I served on the USS Sampson out of Mayport from 81 to 85. It sure was a little powerhouse - surface to air missiles, 5” guns fore and aft, Asroc ASW launcher, torpedoes, etc. I was the missile officer for several years.

Of course it could only acquire one target per radar director (total of 3 targets; 2 for the missiles and one with guns), unlike the new phased array radars (Aegis, for e.g.) that can acquire and track hundreds of targets and share with other ships!
