The status of Mayon Volcano is maintained at Alert Level 4. PHIVOLCS-DOST reiterates that the Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) from the summit of 8-km on the southern sector of the volcano and 7-km on the northern sector should be free from human activity. Areas just outside of this EDZ should prepare for evacuation in the event hazardous eruptions intensify. Active river channels and those perennially identified as lahar prone in the southern sector should also be avoided especially during bad weather conditions or when there is heavy and prolonged rainfall. In addition, Civil Aviation Authorities must advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejected ash and volcanic fragments from sudden explosions may pose hazards to aircrafts. PHIVOLCS–DOST is closely monitoring Mayon Volcano’s activity and any new significant development will be immediately posted to all concerned.

The significance of this, from our prospective, is that we're in a very low solar minimum, comparable to the Dalton Minimum of the early 19th Century. The famous Year Without a Summer happened in 1816, from the combination of low solar activity and a volcanic winter event.

If we have a combination of low solar activity plus one or more major volcanic events, it may have a significantly adverse effect on agriculture around the world.

As if they aren't already starting to say that early 2010 is going to be quite cold, now we have mother Earth adding in her two cents.

This is really going to frost our shorts.

Yes, of course, and we have major volcanic events scheduled this year ~ as always.

I think this is how a glacial cycle gets kickstarted. First, low Sunspots. Second, volcanic events. Third, right spot orbitally speaking.

Then someone comes along and proves that Global Warming is a fraudulent scheme, and next thing you know it's ice up to your patooties, and then the roof, and then 2 miles high and it's all over for 100,000 years.

It’s been within days of eruption for what seems like weeks now. Is it going to happen or not?

That sounds like the lyrics to the theme for TV’s “The Big Bang Theory” :)

Maybe the glaciers will come back and push liberal New England into the Atlantic! Of course, the conservatives will see it coming, since it takes years for glaciers to move, but the leechf’#ks will still be there(like with Katrina) when the glaciers arrive, because they were waiting for someone from ‘the government’ to come and carry them to safety and give them a new house somewhere.

Thanx !

Climate modeling has incorporated sulfate aerosols produced by human activity. Those particles reflect solar energy back into space, thus cooling the planet. The significant effect of the sulfate particles was confirmed by the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption, which threw vast amounts of particles (an estimated 20 million tons, much more than the combined total of all the cars ever in existence have produced) into the upper atmosphere, leading to a measurable cooling of the earth for the next two years. Sulfate aerosols not only reflect energy directly away from the globe but act to condense water vapor into clouds, which also reflect incoming solar radiation away from the earth. The net effect is to reduce the amount of warming from manmade sources. Incorporating the effects of aerosols into the models has led to better predictions of past temperature changes; more important, it has reduced significantly the forecast temperatures and sea level rises resulting from climate changes. Like with this thread: Major Northern Hemisphere Cold Snap Coming . Anything that produces further cooling will be bad news for farmers around the world.

So when the mile thick glaciers once again come down the Hudson River and shove New York into the Atlantic will Al Gore finally just shut up? Or will he make another billion dollars hawking Global Cooling.

They're currently getting lava flows, and idiots are flocking TOWARDS the volcano. The "blow its top" eruption keeps getting predicted as "any day now".

Do the idiots in question understand there is no money involved when they get their Darwin Award?

If it’s close to the same elevation as Mt. Pinatubo, it will be sending ash to the heavens. We’ll have some beautiful sunsets. Also should expect some global warming which is one of the causes of real global warming.

I meant to say global cooling not global warming. I’ll report back the elevation of Mt. Pinatubo compared to the current volcano. Higher elevation is what makes the big dif here.

Mt Pinotubo elevation was 4875 msl and the Mayon Volcano elevation is 8077 msl. Wow that’s pretty high for a volcano. Now we will have to wait to see how explosive it is. Could be bad.

Mayon is 2,463 meters, versus 1485 meters ( 1745 meters before 1991 eruption) for Pinotubo.

That’s the whole reason I even mentioned it.

They keep saying it’s going to explode, but pretty soon if it doesn’t, people are going to go back to their homes and ignore the warnings.

If it then erupts, many will die.

If it’s going to go, I hope it goes very soon and not another couple weeks.
