Obama: There's a systemic failure in airline security

HONOLULU — President Barack Obama said Tuesday “a systemic failure” allowed the attempted Christmas Day attack on a Detroit-bound flight from Amsterdam. He called it “totally unacceptable.”

The president said he wants preliminary results by Thursday from two investigations he has ordered to examine the many lapses that occurred.

“There was a mix of human and systemic failures that contributed to this potential catastrophic breach of security,” Obama said.

It will take weeks for a more comprehensive investigation into what allowed a 23-year-old Nigerian carrying explosives onto the flight despite the fact the suspect had possible ties to al Qaeda, Obama said.

Yesterday, a reporter at WIOD-AM radio stated in error, "...there were systematic failures..."

Which might be the more correct phrasing!

Three secret service employees were ‘suspended’ for allowing the Salahi’s into the White House.

At this time, there has been no one held responsible for this horrific breach of national security.

Further, by blaming the system he removes himself from the line of responsibility.

He can show his dedication to national security by firing Janet Nappy who seems as competent as that other Janet Reno.

We need to adapt El Al’s security measures which were bandied about after 9-11 and promptly forgotten. They include such things as:

profiling by religion,
looking at recent travel history,
checking passport and name against multiple data bases,
multiple screenings of luggage,
luggage not left unattended once screened,
intense inspection of passports and boarding passes,
sky marshals on every plane,
double doors on all cockpits,
pilots are allowed to armed in cockpits, and
interviews by security officers prior to boarding.

Even at overseas airports El Al conducts security checks even if they are supervised by government or private security firms.

I agree. El Al is the gold standard of airline security.

The only reason the US doesn’t emulate them is pure PC crap and nothing else.

Absolutely.

What I like about El Al's approach is that they catch not only those on the terror watch lists, also those who have recently traveled to Muslim countries for 'training', converts who don't fit the traditional Jihadist profile, e.g. blond blue-eyed man name Patrick O'Reilly, and those who are duped into carrying 'gifts' in their luggage.

Everyone is treated the same.

You don't have to get partially undressed to fly.

And, IIRC anyone who not allowed to fly EL AL is very courteously assisted in getting a flight on another airline.

The goofballs who think that profiling is “racial” need to realize that there are millions of light-skinned Muslims from places like Bosnia, Albania, and Chechnya who can “pass” for white Americans and slip through easily if not screened properly. Some of the photos published of the Ft. Hood killer, Hasan, look mighty European to me though he is a Jordanian Arab.

It isn’t race and it really isn’t religion that is the problem - it is ideology. El Al seems to do an incredible job of keeping the kooks out. I’m sure that the vast majority of them know better than to even try.
