Handling problems the Obama way

HONOLULU — There is a sense of déjà vu in the Obama administration’s response to the attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Day. A by-now familiar pattern has been established for dealing with unexpected problems.

First, White House aides downplay the notion that something may have gone wrong on their part. While staying out of the spotlight, the president conveys his efforts to address the situation and his feelings about it through administration officials. After a few days, the White House concedes on the issue, and perhaps Barack Obama even steps out to address it.

That same scenario unfolded over the summer, when Obama said Sgt. James Crowley, a white Cambridge, Mass., police officer, “acted stupidly” when he arrested Henry Louis Gates Jr., a black Harvard professor, in his own home. It happened in March when the public was outraged over AIG dishing out hefty bonuses. More recently the public witnessed the dynamic after a security breach at President Barack Obama’s first state dinner.

But the fact that the issue now is a terrorist incident — albeit an unsuccessful one — makes the stakes much higher, and the White House’s usual approach more questionable. That this test of his leadership comes while he’s on vacation in tropical Hawaii further complicates things.

After delivering his first public remarks Monday about a Nigerian man’s attempt to blow up a Northwest Airlines jetliner over Detroit, the president motorcaded to the golf course at a nearby country club. Optics aside, it had taken Obama three days to issue a statement on the incident, and the administration was left struggling to control the message.

Do you suppose that Brack might not be as smart as we were led to believe? And Rahm was a representative in congress before he was promoted. Maybe he’s in over his pay grade as well. Axelrod has no track record to speak of except taking Soros’ calls.

His comfort zone is talking and dealing with health care, carbon offsets, and having beer summits. He's a fish out of water as Commander in Chief, or as he called it on the campaign trail, “Commander of Chiefs.”

He'll let others make the real executive decisions, but also let them fall on the sword when things go wrong, may that be Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. He's trying to stay removed from these issues, thereby not getting his hands dirty. It's a new form of leadership style developed by Harvard educated lawyers with experience in community organizing- Leading from the rear.

He’s emotionless. He’s like an automaton. An actor who doesn’t even look like he feels his part.

I not only don’t think he’s very smart but I think he’s completely heartless.

Ah yes, Obama’s thugs got in the famous line “it’s Bush’s fault” again.

Sticks his head under the sand, the problem is covered up and he doesn’t have to deal with it. Obama has the brain of a gnat.

I believe Obama’s odd detachment stems from narcissism: nothing is real to him unless it affects him personally. He addresses issues only in terms that allow him to reflect the spotlight back on himself, and yet manages to avoid responsibility by blaming others for problems. He’s all image and no substance, just as many of us suspected last year. In most people, these qualities are merely annoying; in a Chief Executive, they are frankly dangerous.

He’s not very smart and has ZERO leadership skills. It’s gonna be a very long 3 years.

Yes, I think it’s a number of things that come together to cause these peculiar non-reactions to emergencies.

1. Yes, he is dumber than he is reputed to be. He’s an affirmative action baby, and it doesn’t help when the teachers keep giving you higher grades than you deserve. I doubt whether he spent a whole lot of time studying.

2. He hates America and he hates Americans. He sides with the Muslims. So he knows that the has to PRETEND to be upset, but he’s not very good at it.

3. He’s a malignant narcissist. He could care less if a bunch of soldiers are shot or a planeload of people die. It’s no skin off his nose. He has more important concerns, like improving his golf game. In short, he feels nothing for anyone but himself. Once you are aware of that, it shows. He is extremely cold emotionally except when talking about himself, and then he gets excited.

Critics on the right have predictably seized on his response as a sign of weak leadership.

One of dozens of signs to date.

The man is simply not a leader and does not study history.

Bush was an active reader of history but Obama seems to not study history. Which is why he does not know how to be president or a leader. He simply thinks he is smart and that he can wing it and he will be fine. This is his reputation from the law review to his brief time in the senate.

We live in a culture of celebrity and it has invaded our leadership.

Zero was born and bred to hate the US military, US wars and all they stand for. The people he surrounded himself for decades were like-minded.

For him to step out of these inbred habits and SUPPORT U.S. MILITARY EFFORTS is like him suddenly waking up and having to speak Lithuanian. HE is like a toddler in these matters.

The above describes the real Obama contrary to the image we see on TV. It is shocking that we have such a floundering, idiot in the WH.
