Christmas 2009 (Australian Defence Force)
Commonwealth of Australia Department of Defence ^ | 25th December 2009

Around 3800 Australian Defence Force personnel will be deployed on Operations overseas and in Australia this Christmas, spending the festive season away from family and friends.

Defence is also gathering Christmas messages from ADF personnel who will be serving on Operations this Christmas. The majority of Australian Defence Force personnel deployed overseas are working in a number of operational areas, including:

Afghanistan as part of the Australian government's commitment to the international coalition against terrorism;

Iraq and the Middle East as part of the Australian government's contribution to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iraq;

East Timor as part of a request from the government of East Timor to assist in restoring peace and stability to their country.

Smaller numbers of Australian Defence Force personnel are deployed in other areas assisting with peacekeeping and peace monitoring operations around the world. Others are serving on boarder protection and surveillance operations in northern Australia.

Thanks to the Australians and all other allies in the field.

I hope you don’t have an ACLU (Australian Civil Liberties Union).
Because if you do, they won’t be happy seeing folks in uniform...
singing Christmas carols!!!

For some reason, our Civil Liberties types seem to have got this one right - a rare event, it sometimes seems. They are fine with Christian observances as long as other faiths get the same opportunity when appropriate - a much more reasonable position than trying to block Christians from expressing their faith.

"Others are serving on boarder protection and surveillance operations in northern Australia."

What a novel idea, maybe could do the same on our southern border...
