BRITAIN faces months of cold weather disruption according to a leading American weather forecasting company yesterday.
The UK and northern Europe are in line for a colder than normal January, February and March, said the firm, WSI, which provides forecasts for many top US corporations.
Its prediction, which contrasts with the Met Offices much more cautious winter forecast, came as Britain struggled in the grip of more Christmas travel chaos caused by days of ice and heavy snow.
Temperatures were expected to plunge as low as -6C in many areas last night.
The Met Office had predicted when the snow was coming. Therefore, there was a window of opportunity for getting gritters out on these roads. Transport Minister Sadiq Khan said he would be asking questions about the difficulties in Basingstoke and Reading where up to 2,000 motorists were trapped on Monday night.
Motorists had to stay overnight in their cars or seek refuge in hotels, churches and emergency shelters opened by the police.
Mr Khan said local authorities had enough grit and the issue was why the grit had not been applied.
But the Local Government Association said its teams had been working round the clock to keep roads clear.
It claimed that in Hampshire and Berkshire its teams had been hit by the perfect winter storm. Grit was applied early in the day but was followed by rush hour coinciding with one of the worst blizzards in a decade.
And it described claims that councils were ill-prepared and had withheld salt from where it was needed as unverified, unsubstantiated and unjustified.

how can this be? Isn’t the planet getting warmer?!
I am stunned.
(sarcasm off)
Just like the British. Everyone knows you don’t put grits on the road. Cream of Wheat works better than grits.
Only if you are living within their stupid climate computer models. Those of us in the real world have to face reality.
-6 C equals +21.2 F. That's cold?
I’ve been reading the headlines out of the UK and German press on their winter storm.
Here’s my perspective from Wyoming: Europeans (modulo the Scandinavians, Baltics and Russia) are simply pussies. The Limey and Kraut press is filled with hand-wringing accounts of how terribly cold it is, how awful the snow is, blah, blah, blah.
Here in Wyoming, we look at this and ask “WTF? This is the same weather we were enjoying here in Wyoming... in OCTOBER.”
I too am stuned like my beeber
For some people, yes. The United Kingdom is surrounded by water. In winter that water is warmer then the typical winter air at that latitude. The further east you go the less of an affect from the oceans water. Thus, Russians probably also laugh at the Western Europeans in the winter time. Some parts of Germany did however get down to -33 C.
Six below, Celsius? This is a problem? Sorry, I’m unmoved.
It’s actually been kind of balmy here in Western Montana. It rained and got rid of the snow.
I kind of like it.
Cheers!
Enjoy it.
There won’t be any ice next year thanks to Global Warming...
More concerned about Global Cooling Blizzards right now. This latest Blizzard to hit Europe killed 100. We now have triple digit deaths from the Blizzards. Just as bad as Hurricanes. Can you imagine the logistics required to support 2,000 motorists strung out over dozens of miles in snow ? If that happens in late January, gonna see some serious freezing numbers.
That-damn-global-warming ping.
In Colorado at over 9,000 ft. here, we’re having a heat wave now. ...almost 17 F, -8 C (approximation). -19 F, -28 C one morning so far (weeks ago). A few inches of snow daily, most days. It’s great! :-)
I-70, eastern plains of Colorado, at least once per year, no imagination necessary.
...on ice most days for about 7 months out of each year, that is.
Let the You’re-a-peon global warming alarmists suck ice for a few months.
Well thank god we’re nationalizing Healthcare just in time then. :)
