When we join together in prayer and action, the will of the people can change history.
The world watched in horror as China’s government tanks killed isolated student protesters in Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989. Just a few months later, on November 9, 1989, we witnessed with joy as the Berlin Wall was dismantled by men and women coming together as one from divided Germany.
I believe that the difference between these two citizen protests was unity that spread from the Monday Demonstrations, which began as weekly prayer meetings at Nikolai Church in Leipzig, East Germany in 1982. The pastor of Nicolai Church often felt like giving up, but the 4 or 5 people who regularly joined him in prayer reminded him of the promise that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. In early September, 1989, West German television broadcast coverage of the “Stasi” (East Germany’s state police) attacking people as they left the church. The government threatened to shut down the Demonstrations “by any means necessary,” and it appeared that Tiananmen Square was about to be repeated at Nicolai Church. However, on October 9, 1989, 70,000 people gathered in the streets outside the church and hundreds of thousands more demonstrated in their own home towns in both East and West Germany, armed with prayers, candles and shouts of “We are the people!”

For years, the American colonists who opposed the actions of King George did not all travel to Boston or Philadelphia. They met in their own town centers and churches, praying together and reading pamphlets about unalienable rights and the illegal and immoral abuses of the colonists by the British Parliament and the King. This is how they joined together to become one People that changed the world.
The promised “transparency” of the Obama administration and the 111th Congress of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is revealed as false by this week’s closed-door, Democrat-only meetings with the President and special deals offered only to stubborn Democrats. Senator Landrieu from Louisiana was promised $300 Million and Senator Nelson of Nebraska was promised $45 Million, so that their States will not suffer with other States in the face of forced expansion of Medicaid.
No one has seen the final bill. What we do know is that health care “reform” will immediately give us new taxes and IRS powers, higher costs at the pharmacy, doctors’ offices and hospital due to new taxes on medical devices and producers, and the first Federal mandate to buy something (insurance) or face fines and prison. In contrast, the uninsured that the Bill is supposed to help won’t get coverage for years. In the meantime, doctors who still accept Medicare will once again face a 21% cut in pay in March, 2010, because the physician pay “fix” has been removed from the Senate Bill.
Senator Reid has called a Senate vote to end debate (cloture) on the health care insurance “reform” bill in the dark of night, early on Monday, December 21, 2009, at 1 AM EST. There’s a whole series of votes scheduled throughout the week, with the actual vote to pass the 2074 page Senate version of the Bill (found here http://www.democrats.senate.gov/reform/patient-protection-affordable-care-act.pdf ) and then Reid’s additional 383 page “manager’s amendment” (found here http://democrats.senate.gov/reform/managers-amendment.pdf ) scheduled for Christmas Eve.
I propose that we follow the example of the Monday Demonstrations and join together in regular Monday meetings all across our Nation. This is something that we can do now, wherever we are – a true grass roots action.
We can bring the “television cameras” and “candles” of 2009/2010: our phones and laptops which will allow us to communicate as one and give us the ability bypass the old fashioned media by recording and broadcasting our gatherings ourselves. (Bring real as well as virtual candles and media, if you want.) We should begin our meetings with prayer just as the original Monday Demonstrations did, asking the Lord for His peace and His protection, both spiritually and physically. Then, we, too, can move into the streets as one people, with one will.
I would like to begin tonight with meetings that start late on Sunday, December 20th and carry over into early Monday morning in order to protest the cloture vote and organize for the future. Because of the short notice, I believe we should agree to gather at our local County Court House or City Hall. This meeting will be hardest on those in the Eastern and Pacific Time Zones. The rest of us will have it easier: in the Central Time zone the vote will be at Midnight Central time, 11 PM Sunday in the Mountain zone.
At tonight’s meeting, please plan a special second gathering to be held if Senator Reid follows through with the final votes on Christmas Eve. Some of us might want to meet as we normally would for Christmas Eve services at our churches. I would love to see the Christmas Eve services at churches across the US dwarf the attendance after September 11, 2001! Everyone who doesn’t have that tradition can again join in front of their local City Hall or County Court House.
It’s time to stop the un-Constitutional spending, deals and games in Congress. Harry Reid has set the time for these first meetings, but he cannot control our prayers or prevent us from joining together to act in unity. Please, join me at the Court House tonight.

Mr. hocndoc (the pawn broker, “hoc”) and I were at the courthouse for about an hour. It was cold for South Texans! We stayed in the truck for most of the time, reading our FR updates and emails.
Our Comal County Courthouse and the plaza in the center of town are beautiful this time of year, with more lights than I’d have thought possible on the buildings, trees and gazebo. It was nearly daylight out there.
Just before midnight, we got out of the truck and walked to the corner. There were just the 3 of us, hoc, doc, and the Lord. We prayed for our Nation, our leaders and lawmakers, and our loved ones.
Since it was just us, I decided that we should encourage everyone to choose a church or synagogue to attend on the day of the final vote.
