Under Obama, the Left feels left out
Politico ^ | December 19, 2009 | Ben Smith & Jonathan Martin

The outrage among some of America’s most vocal liberals at President Barack Obama’s failure to expand government-run health care caps a year of disappointments for Obama’s allies on the left and raises worrying questions for Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections.

The revolt led by former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean comes after a series of more contained disappointments among traditional Democratic constituencies that invested heavily in Obama — unions, gays, civil libertarians, Hispanics, and anti-war Democrats, among others — who have seen specific promises deferred and grand hopes of systematic change denied by an administration that has found itself severely limited by a combination of economic realities, congressional imperatives, and tactical choices.

The disillusion has produced a growing tide of organizing energy — and money — among liberals aimed at dragging the White House back to where many supporters believe Obama's heart really lies. Union presidents have discarded their talking points and are openly sparring with the White House, while gay rights activists threaten civil disobedience, the ACLU keeps litigating, and congressional Hispanic leaders work to force their issues into the debate.

But while those actions may actually create politically useful space to the president’s left, the other consequence of disillusion is what polls have found to be deepening apathy among Democratic voters.

Millions of Americans Hoodwinked

Millions of Americans inspired by the soaring rhetoric and pageantry surrounding a mixed race presidential candidate went to the polls a year ago thinking their vote would usher in a post-racial America and a new transparency in government. These Americans actually believed in this pledge:

“We will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on earth. This was the moment—this was the time—when we came together to remake this great nation so that it may always reflect our very best selves and our highest ideals.”

Now these hapless Americans are trying to understand what happened to their country where double-digit unemployment is not even top of mind in this new administration. Where redistribution of wealth is fostering a new era of class resentment and hollowing out once robust industrial centers. This IS THE TIME where 1 in 4 American homes is not worth the outstanding mortgage balance. The IS THE MOMENT when nobody could give a crap about providing health care to the irresponsible or the effect of climate change gibberish based on fake science generated by corrupt scientists hoping to reign in ever more grant money.

****And the administration ....... pursued more through back room deals with industry than mass mobilizations of ordinary citizens.***

That is what Marxist dictatorships do once they wrestle power from the sheeple!! Duh!

Yes, it’s all hogwash. The Left is making noise to try to assure that it gets what it wants from the Democrats. It’s all the usual cynical rubbish.

What is truly sinister about this entire situation, is that the nutjobs on the left are “disillusioned” because he has not destroyed the country fast enough (i.e. public option, nationalizing private industries, etc.), while those on the right are disillusioned because of what he has been able to accomplish in slightly less than a year.

The purpose of most of this noise is to get Pelosi to put back as much that was taken out of the healthcare bill as possible.

When the left goes on the march they will be nothing like the peace loving Tea Party people. Obama has much more to fear from them than from the right.

constituencies that invested heavily in Obama — unions, gays, civil libertarians, Hispanics, and anti-war Democrats, among others: rustlers, cutthroats, murders, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con-men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglars, horse thieves, bull-dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, sh*t-kickers, and Methodists

The list in the article was incomplete; Hedley Lamarr, erstwhile Rahm archetype, had the unabridged listing. Historicity is important.

Bravo, very well said! And this IS THE TIME when the fools who voted for this slick-talking, narcissistic, self-important liar to be exposed for all that I just said he is! He’s more than this but Christian decency and the rules of this web-site prohibit me from saying more. He’s a fraud. And a very dangerous one at that.
