Federal employees owe $3 billion in taxes

Federal workers owed more than $3 billion in income taxes in 2008, according to the Internal Revenue Service, a figure down slightly from 2007.

The agency reported that 276,300 current and retired federal employees owed $3,042,200,000 in 2008, down from $3,586,784,725 in unpaid taxes in 2007. The list includes White House and Congressional staffers and current and former active-duty and reserve members of the military.

The agency provides an updated snapshot of tax habits among current and former federal workers each year and provides copies of the list to reporters upon request. The agency does not provide similar snapshots of the total number of all delinquent taxpayers.

In a sign that the IRS practices what it preaches, the Treasury Department, which includes the tax-collecting agency, had the best compliance rate of Cabinet-level departments. Less than 1% of employees were delinquent with their taxes.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development fared worst among Cabinet departments, with more than 4 percent of workers owing a combined $4.76 million.

Among all government agencies and departments, the U.S. Postal Service had the greatest number of tax delinquents. The government's second-largest employer had 28,913 workers -- or just under 4 percent -- owing roughly $298 million.

Fifty White House staffers owed a combined $812,917 in 2008, the IRS said. Up on Capitol Hill, slightly more than 4 percent of House staffers owed Uncle Sam $5.8 million, compared to 3.2 percent of Senate employees that owed almost $2.5 million.

More than 2 percent of military reservists and national guardsman owed $198.5 million, while just less than 2 percent of active duty service members owed $102.4 million.

The tax information was first reported Monday morning by Washington's WTOP radio.

More Federal Workers Make Six Figures in the Recession Posted: 12/11/09 Filed Under:Economy, Deficit

The number of federal employees making over $100,000 per year has exploded in the first 18 months of the recession, USA Today reports, sending the total percentage from 14 percent to 19 percent.

The highest-paid federal workers are seeing the largest increases: In the same period, the number of civil servants making over $150,000 jumped from 1,868 to 10,100. When the recession began, only one person at the Department of Transportation was making over $170,000. Eighteen months later, 1,690 employees do.

The skyrocketing federal pay is systematic, reaching every level in every agency. Congress approved across-the-board raises of 3 percent in January 2008 and 3.9 percent in January 2009. President Obama has recommended 2 percent pay raises in January 2010, the smallest since 1975. Most federal employees get “steps” — pay increases based on length of service — that can run up to 1.5 percent per year.

Several laws have made it easier to raise federal workers’ salaries, particularly the National Security Pay Scale, which allows the Defense Department to award merit-based salary increases. And while many agencies prohibit employees from making more than the agency’s head, increases in bosses’ pay has allowed earnings to rise for everyone below.

Federal employees owe $3 billion in taxes from income entirely derived from taxpayer money.

Why the flurry of hit pieces against federal civil service workers?

Call me paranoid but I think another group of Americans is being set up to be demonized and stripped of their excess “wealth”

My wife is a federal employee. She's also a Freeper and in no way a RINO. I work in the private sector, but I've applied at some federal agencies myself in an attempt to better my own career situation - living near DC it truly is, for better or worse, sometimes the best option out there.

We're not all illiterate pencil-pushers. In many cases, people are military or work at the DoD. Some simply took the job that offered them what they were looking for.

Let's not demonize federal workers, instead, demonize the entire bureaucracy as a whole. It's no different than Iran - we don't hate Iranians, we hate “Iran” as the institution it is today under Ahminejawhateverhisnameis.

All the Federal places I worked were right on top of witholdings. I don't think it is the little guys that are tax cheats. The FERS retirement for most Federal Employees is the largest retirement system in the world. I suspect that Obama wants to default on federal workers and watch for a bail out on the big guys.

As for the military, the average enlisted guy shouldn’t have to pay any taxes. Especially when you look at their low pay and the fact that they are putting their lives on the line. Don’t collect from the military until you collect from all other government employees first.

Look at that article, the House staff, the Post Office, HUD-the WHITE HOUSE- all double the rate of tax underwitholding than the entire US military including reserves

Yeah, but from our standpoint. They are getting a nice raise.

I have been a civil service worker since July 1973 and I DO NOT owe one cent in any type of taxes.
