They all look ridiculous with those weird spray-on tans and ghetto-riche wardrobes. But to them it’s cool.

***They are obsessed with their bodies, tanning, and sex. The girls openly talk about trying to sleep with as many guys as they can.***

When I saw that it was the Jersey shore and also Seaside NJ I was curious about it so I watched about thirty minutes of it..Since my husband is from Toms Rivers and Seaside is just across the bridge we went there often when we visited his mother and dad..I can tell you that not all people that go to Jersey shore are sex fiends and love they self people..There are those that think they are gods gift to the world but not like these kids..Of the people I was associated with there they would never let their children do a show like that or even be like that..Anyway don’t think all people are like these filthy kids..It is mainly a family beach and board walk..

Actually, the guidos and guidettes who have infiltrated the Jersey Shore are from Staten Island. Ay-Oh

My kids forced me to watch some of this last week. It was as if a revelation had come to them. They had no idea that there were people like this; they thought my tales of New York were exaggerated. I said to my daughter, “Now, dear, do you see why I was telling you not to put streaks in your dark hair?” and she nodded in horrified silence.

I have rarely seen such a pathetic bunch of young people. I didn’t watch past the first awful episode, though, so mercifully I was spared the knowledge of who was getting into bed with whom, if anyone.

I’d rather live my entire life celibate than to be as shallow and meaningless as those people have made themselves. Worse, however, is that we have become so lost as a society such that a show like this can be a hit.

There was a comedian being interviewed recently, and was asked what his ‘perfect woman’ would be like. He said she would have to be smart. The host asked, ‘What about hot, voluptuous etc.?’. The comedian said, ‘Technology and medicine have advanced to the point at which you can create beauty. You can have bigger boobs, a rounder butt, plumper lips etc.. But you can’t fix stupid’.

I actually don’t think about it in terms of intelligence. I don’t think acting shallow is a function of intelligence. It’s a function of several other things, including intellectual laziness, and a lack of true self respect or personal insight.

TV is a wasteland - as the trend can only be downwards. What shocks today, won’t be so shocking tomorrow, as the peons will become immune.

I haven’t watched MTV in ages, and only occasionally, VH1, which is becoming pretty much the same. Reality shows are boring; they are scripted and people are either on their best behavior when the cameras are on or do something outrageous to encourage viewership and up the ratings.

Both channels used to be about music. Now they are all about sex, drugs and stupid behavior. These days I’ll watch TV Land, Fox News, and maybe a good movie (most of the movies I watch come from Turner Classic Movies or from my own collection). Overall, TV is such a waste.

As an Italian, it embarrasses me

Ditto here. I was disgusted by the previews.

The people on the show do not seem to me to be exaggerations of that segment of New Jersey culture. That’s pretty much my observation of that slice of society there from my time in college in Philadelphia and living in NYC for 15 years.

Here is a video of the ever classy ‘Guido’ punching another Jersey Shore cast member square in the face.

Yeah, he went to jail.

The writer seems to think this is some new phenomenon spurred on by the Gotti boys reality show. This stereotype has been around a long, long, long time and it’s not just a NJ/Italian sterotype. They’re all around, Queens, Staten Island...the whole tri-state area and beyond.

These people seem to have some weird ghetto trash thing going on—without the tradition, religion, and sense of family and honor that older generations of Italian-Americans had, and used to make their way in America. The only “Italian” link to their culture is their food—when the wise Latina was jacking her jaws about her “culture” that’s all she could come up with, too. Food.

America is essentially becoming a ghetto rat culture—the drugs, the lack of a work ethic and discipline, the nonexistant attention span, the mindless, soulless sex—devoid of feelings-and God forbid, with no thought of consequences, the lack of manners, the proud, preening ignorance, the entitlement mentality, the “Hey, look at me!” mania, the widespread obesity......

Our young people mindlessly mimic the least productive and most destructive members of our society—except they don’t get to carry the race card. (which is getting somewhat tattered, BTW) What’s going to happen when the people footing the bill for this nonsense get tired of it?

I live about 10 mins away from Seaside or as we (somewhat) normal people call it...Sleazeside. This show dosen’t surprise me. I have seen a slow but steady downhill progression for years. The place was beautiful and family friendly back in the 70s. Maybe it was disco that started it. I spent alot of time there in the 80s and even worked for a brief time at one of the clubs back then. It was a neat sociological experiment to watch people in that atmosphere. Around then, it was a mix of new wave and guidos but eventually by the 90s the guidos took over. These days I go over there 2-3 times a summer just for a walk on the boardwalk and it horrifies me. Venice Beach of the east coast.
