He probably will not survive prison. And, based on my experience, threats against his personal safety is not considered a good enough reason to be put in protective custody.
Before the prison administration will look at PC for him there will have to be an actual assault on him and, based on his crime, he will definitely be attacked and it will be an inmate with nothing to lose who will do the deed.
I will be very surprised if he survives prison.
