Harvard School of Public Health: Coffee, Exercise Can Help Men Defeat Prostate Cancer

Boston (SmartAboutHealth) - According to two new studies, coffee and exercise may be the keys to men beating prostate cancer.

The first study was carried out by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, and was led by Kathryn M. Wilson. The study focused on data from 50,000 men to get an idea as to the rate at which prostate cancer was being diagnosed, and whether or not coffee would help in any way.

Over a 20-year period from 1986 to 2006, there were nearly 5,000 cases of prostate cancer diagnosed out of the 50,000 men.

What they found was that men who consumed six or more cups of coffee each day reduced their risk of all forms of prostate cancer by 19%.

On top of that, they reduced their risk of an aggressive form of prostate cancer by 41%.

This shows a clear relationship between the amount of coffee consumed, and a reduced risk of prostate cancer.

A direct link was found whether it was regular coffee, or decaffeinated coffee.

The second study released was led by Stacy A. Kenfield from the Harvard School of Public Health.

They looked into the physical activity of roughly 2,700 men who were all diagnosed with prostate cancer.

What they found was a direct link between exercise and prostate cancer survival.

Men who went through vigorous exercise, having 3 or more hours of exercise each week, reduced their risk of death from prostate cancer by 12%.

The combination of these two, coffee and prostate cancer, may truly be the keys to defeating the terrible disease.

Coffee may reduce risk of advanced prostate cancer

Men who regularly drink coffee may be less likely to need advanced prostate cancer treatment than those who rarely consume the hot beverage, new research suggests.

A study presented at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research found that men who drank the most coffee were 60 per cent less likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer than those who never had it.

Coffee contains many active compounds such as antioxidants and minerals and it is thought to be one or more of these that affects prostate cancer risk, rather than caffeine.

The study involved nearly 50,000 men, 4,975 of whom developed prostate cancer over a 20-year period.

Dr Kathryn Wilson, from Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, commented: “Coffee has effects on insulin and glucose metabolism, as well as sex hormone levels - all of which play a role in prostate cancer.

“It would be very exciting if this association is confirmed in other studies.”

The majority of cases of prostate cancer occur in men over the age of 70.

As well as age, risk factors for the disease include family history and being of African ancestry.

Researchers say coffee may provide protection against prostate cancer

http://www2.wnct.com/nct/news/local/article/researchers_say_coffee_may_provide_protection_against_prostate_cancer/82640/

For men, that morning cup of coffee could be more than just a jolt of caffeine. Men may be getting protection against prostate cancer, as well.

A study of nearly 50,000 men over 20 years shows that those who drank coffee had a 60 percent lower risk of aggressive prostate cancer. The study also shows that drinking coffee may even lower the risk of other types of prostate cancer.

Coffee affects insulin and glucose, metabolism, and sex hormone levels, all of which play a role in prostate cancer.

The study suggests that caffeine is not the ideological factor. It could be hormonal or antioxidents.
So men benefitted even when they were drinking decaf.

Researchers say it’s still too early to say coffee will protect men against prostate cancer, but all indications are it won’t harm them.

I think I’d choose prostate cancer over drinking Starbucks burnt-tar tasting coffee.

You might want to reconsider that statement given this report

TITLE : Coffee Cuts Stroke Risk in Women
Biggest Benefit Seen in Women Drinking 4 or More Cups of Coffee a Day

By Caroline Wilbert

WebMD Health News Reviewed by Elizabeth Klodas, MD, FACC

Feb. 16, 2009 -- Coffee addicts: Your habit may actually be good for you.

Regular coffee consumption reduces the risk of stroke in women, according to a new study. The study, published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, shows that women who drank four or more cups of coffee a day had a 20% reduced risk of stroke compared to women who had less than one cup per month. Drinking two to three cups per day reduced risk by 19%. Drinking a cup five to seven times a week reduced risk by 12%.

Researchers analyzed data on 83,076 women who participated in the Nurses' Health Study. Participants began the study in 1980 with no history of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, or cancer. Every two to four years, the women filled out food frequency questionnaires about their diets. During the study, which lasted 24 years, 2,280 strokes were documented.

The benefits of coffee are much more significant for nonsmokers. For women who had never smoked or quit the habit, drinking four cups or more of coffee a day was associated with a 43% reduction in stroke risk. For women who smoked, drinking four cups or more was associated with only a 3% reduction in risk.

“The potential benefits of coffee cannot counterbalance the detrimental effects smoking has on health,” Esther Lopez-Garcia, lead author of the study and assistant professor of preventive medicine at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain, says in a news release.

In addition to smoking, having high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol also neutralized the coffee effect.

The benefits do not appear to come from caffeine. Participants who drank tea and caffeinated soft drinks did not experience the same reduction in stroke risk. “This finding supports the hypothesis that components in coffee other than caffeine may be responsible for the potential beneficial effect of coffee on stroke risk,” Lopez-Garcia says. “Antioxidants in coffee lower inflammation and improve blood vessel function.

“The beneficial effects of coffee can only be applied to healthy people," she says. "Anyone with health problems that can be worsened by coffee ( insomnia, anxiety, hypertension, or heart problems) should talk to their doctor about their specific risk.”

And the data suggest that women still need to pay attention to any stroke risk factors they may have. Drinking coffee will not make those risk factors go away.

Why not try the ones at Dunkin Donuts or MacDonald's ? Better still, go to a Cafe and get yourself a great tasting Espresso or Cappuccino.

After years of coffee consumption I can now start on the exercise routine, as soon as the weather warms up to about 70 degrees...

There is something about the pits of cherry-like fruits, coffee beans, saw palmetto, and pomegranates, for example, that provide protection.

Funny. But coffee is loaded with antioxidants and likely reduces plaque formation in the bodies arteries. My guess is that it’s both cardio and stroke-protective if not consumed in insane quantities.

Didn't work for me. Diagnosed in 2003 at age 52 and again in 2009.

To be fair, never drank 6 cups daily, perhaps 3. Exercise mainly walking 3 hours per week.
