Maryland’s foreign-born population has grown by 34.6 percent while its native-born population has increased by 3.3 percent. .Public school enrollment of students who require special instruction in English has soared even more, rising by 93.5 percent from 2000 to 2008 while overall enrollment declined slightly.

A pair of recently released documents on illegal aliens in Maryland discuss the effect the spending has had on the state treasury. Both agree the cash-strapped state is spending at least $448 million on children of undocumented aliens per year and more than $100 million on health care costs.

The difference is in how one counts citizens born to parents who are in the state illegally. For example, the Federation for American Immigration Reform includes children of illegals when it compiles its figures. As a consequence, FAIR reports Marylanders spend more than $966 million annually on education for an estimated 80,800 children of illegal aliens. Nearly $250 million is spent on providing special English instruction to an estimated 35,000 children of illegal aliens. About 9.6 percent of the K-12 public school students in Maryland are children of illegal aliens.

The Immigration Policy Center excluded U.S. children of illegals when it countered the FAIR report this week. It says 68 percent (or $966.4 million) of FAIR’s “$1.4 billion” estimate consists of K-12 education costs for the children of unauthorized immigrants—of whom 73 percent are U.S.-born, U.S.-citizens who have at least one unauthorized parent. Likewise, another 12 percent (or $167.2 million) of the “$1.4 billion” figure consists of the “costs of medical care related to illegal immigration”—yet 65 percent of these expenses are Medicaid costs for U.S.-born, U.S.-citizen children with an unauthorized parent.

IPC points out these are children who will go on to become tax-paying “natives” when they are adult workers.

IPC did not address FAIR’s claims on incarceration. The cost of incarcerating illegal aliens in Maryland’s state and county prisons amounts to about $29 million a year — not including related law enforcement and judicial expenses or the monetary costs of the crimes that led to the incarceration, according to FAIR.

However, as the report explains, this number is probably low. Several governments, including but not limited to Baltimore City and Prince George’s County, are not counted in the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, which is administered by the Office of Justice Programs in the U.S. Department of Justice.

AMNESTY....What does 20 million people actually look like?

Do you realize if this AMNESTY happens we are in effect creating the equivilant population of over 17 of our states to this country? And that’s not even considering the chain migration that is in every amnesty bill or the millions of illegal alien anchor babies intent on carrying out the terror of their Mexican drug cartels. (Remember, anchor babies are US citizens..voters....who aren't counted in the illegal alien numbers!)

Please look at what giving amnesty to as many as 20,000,000 illegal alien foreign nationals actually represents. More than the population of 16 states and DC!

According to the 2000 census, 18,785,867 is the total populations combined of Wyoming, Dist. of Columbia, Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Delaware, Montana, Rhode Island, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, Idaho, Nebraska, West Virginia, New Mexico and Nevada.

My teacher relatives say the schools in Florida are filled with fat little immigrant kids that all get taxpayer funded lunch, every day.

I have to assume those are their parents I see in the grocery store waddling around with two full grocery carts and paying with food stamps.

This is a falacy. And here's why.

The average Mexican Illegal Immigrant has a culture where the bar is set low - (some call this a lack of ambition, I call it laziness) where if a son earns $1 more than his father, he is a success. Education is not important; but working at $10-15/hr is the height of success. Being good Catholics they work hard, and have large families. But, if you work at even $15/hr, that translates into a family income of ~$30,000/yr. Because a family of 4 pays NO TAXES, yet they are the recipient of more than the average quantity of health, food and educational care. They are a Net Loss to the USA, not a contributing part of the USA. The more citizens we have who take more than they give, the more we need to take from those citizens who contriubute.

Where we were once a 'melting pot' we are now encouraging those people who left their homelands to re-create their homeland in America - to the harm of everyone.

These little kiddies are very expensive in CA. First we bus them to better schools, then we feed them..breakfast and lunch, then we sent the to ESL(when their parents speak spanish at home), then we send them to afterschool day care so Mom can work for cash. Then we wonder why our states are broke. The burden of these kids is at least twice that of a english speaking kid.
It is a clear case of the welfare state needing clients to survive.

Yes, there are plenty of reasons, and here is just one! California gives over and above what the feds give to Illegal Aliens. Yesterday I was at my doctor's office and picked up a booklet funded 'with a generous grant from the Calif. Bar Foundation', titled, "Seniors & the Law" A Guide for Maturing Californians. They pointed out many programs, such as property tax deferment for seniors in financial trouble, that have been eliminated because of budget cuts...but they didn't cut this one!

Try telling that to the Republicans, who have backed illegals in the past, or a form of it. They say the companies need them, as they are the ones who apply for low paying jobs. However, as posters have pointed out, they usually pay little in taxes and when send money to keep Mexico afloat—it isn’t taxed at the bank level either. So, when they go back, they have money!

Texas does all that PLUS sends them home at night with a snakc pack AND gives free breakfast and lunch and snakcs all summer when school is not in session.
Texas teaches and tests them in spanish up to 10th grade.

To the point that the old theory of second or third generation that ship sailed once we started catering to them in spanish, there is no need to learn English and they are not.
Maryland was stupid to end up where they are. Border states have it harder but we also should have awakened years ago

I remember, some years ago on FR, that there was a similar thread about CA concerning their school system. Someone in the comments section pointed out that that if you multiplied the number of illegals in the school system by the cost per pupil, you came out with the exact deficit in funds that were causing the problem.

I'm thinking that MD is now discovering this; but, being a "Blue" state, they will not acknowledge the obvious.
