Mayor Bill White will formally enter the race for governor today, instantly becoming the Democrats' best hope of winning a statewide office in seven years.
White, a three-term mayor who is balding and known for something of a bland personality, is expected use self-deprecating humor to tell a Hilton Americas crowd of supporters that he knows he is not a perfect candidate but is someone who can get things done.
White has said he wants to end strident partisanship in Austin. He will tell supporters he wants to improve high school graduation rates and slow the rising costs of insurance and college tuition.
He will build his campaign on a record as Houston mayor, claiming lower crime rates and successful battles with polluters to clean the city's air even while being opposed by the state's environmental protection agency.
White will face four opponents in the Democratic primary, and the winner of that contest will take on the victor of the Republican fight between Gov. Rick Perry, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and activist Debra Medina.
Perry, the longest-serving governor in Texas history, officially filed to run Thursday for an unprecedented third full term.
Perry said he has a conservative record of holding the line on state spending and keeping the state's economy from sagging as badly as the rest of the nation. He said it is up to the states to stand in the path of a federal government run amok over national health care and climate change legislation.
Hutchison plans to file for the primary on Monday.

White, Hutchison lobby Army for Sealy truck plant
By STEWART M. POWELL and JOE HOLLEY
HOUSTON CHRONICLE
WASHINGTON Houston Mayor Bill White on Thursday challenged an Army decision to end 17 years of combat truck production in suburban Houston, warning the top procurement officer it was a mistake and a financial risk to send the $2.6 billion contract to the winning bidder in Wisconsin.
On the eve of announcing his expected bid for Texas governor, the mayor led a bipartisan delegation of Texans that included Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Dallas, and 11 House members in a 90-minute meeting before Dean G. Popps, the Army's acting assistant secretary for acquisitions, logistics and technology.
The Texans urged Army officials to reconsider the bid by the Sealy, Texas branch of BAE Systems if the Government Accountability Office orders the contract rebid. BAE Systems expects to hear the outcome of its appeal to the GAO by Dec. 14.
The loss of the contract at the Sealy plant could jeopardize 10,000 direct and indirect jobs in the greater Houston area, according to the Greater Houston Partnership.

So basically, we have to choose between Kay! the RINO and Toll-road Perry.
Hutchison is wasting her time. Perry will beat White soundly.
Perry is an example of someone who is lucky in his enemies. It is not that Rick is a great choice — it is that he is a better choice than the other choices.
So basically, we have to choose between Kay! the RINO and Toll-road Perry.
Yep, King and Queen for life in Texas politics... or I guess you could go with Medina, the unknown or I hear Kinky is running again this time as the democrat that he is. Texas should be able to do better than this crop, don’t you think?
........
Voter registration closes Feb. 2, 2010 for the primary. I received my automatic renewal registration card this week.
........
Hutchison is wasting her time. Perry will beat White soundly.
Maybe but never forget Perry got less than 40% of the vote last time [2006] and Texas is rapidly seeing a lot of new residents who don’t necessarily have the same voting habits that you’d expect.
City of Houston is Bankrupt (So are California, Oregon, and Pension Plans in General)

I wouldn’t vote for White anyway, but this seals it.
And I am sure this bit of news about Houston’s financial problems which have increased under White will make front page headlines in the Chronicle right next to the articles blasting Sheila Jackson Lee.
You forgot this one:
MAYOR WHITE & ACORN TEAM UP TO FIGHT FORECLOSURE
Foreclosure Prevention Fair Planned for Saturday, June7th
June 3, 2008 — Over 3000 homes face foreclosure each month in the greater Houston area. That is one in every 168 households [1] . While the sub-prime crisis has had devastating effects in many areas, ACORN and the City of Houston have decided to launch an aggressive campaign to prevent foreclosures and help troubled borrowers.
Mayor Bill White, in partnership with ACORN, is holding a Foreclosure Prevention Fair at the George R. Brown Convention Center on Saturday, June 7th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The event is free, and open to anyone who may be in danger of foreclosure, has an adjustable rate mortgage about to reset, or simply feels they are in a bad loan. At the event, borrowers will have the opportunity to meet with expert, HUD certified, ACORN Housing counselors to discuss their situations and determine their best options. Several lenders, including Chase, Countrywide Mortgage, GMAC Homecomings Mortgage, HSBC, and Litton, will be on site to meet directly with their borrowers to discuss affordable loan modifications. Attendees should bring their most recent mortgage statement or foreclosure notice. Assistance will be available in Spanish, English, and Vietnamese.
ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, has been fighting predatory lending for nearly 15 years. For much of that time, the fight was to prevent lenders from charging unnecessarily high interest rates, adding excessive points and fees, and attaching prepayment penalties that end up locking people into these high-cost loans. Through their efforts, ACORN won a class action lawsuit against Household Finance and won a settlement that stopped many foreclosures, and fixed bad loans. This also prompted many Attorneys General across the country to go after them, resulting in a $500 million settlement. Recently, ACORN has reached an agreement with Countrywide to remedy their unfair lending practices with loan modifications.
Nationwide, ACORN Housing was able to help over 4,000 people facing foreclosure in 2007. Over the last 6 months, counselors have helped hundreds of homeowners secure loan modifications that moved them from a high, adjustable rate loan to a low, fixed rate loan. The National Foreclosure Mitigation Fund recently awarded ACORN Housing a $7.8 million grant to continue its work in foreclosure prevention counseling. This grant allows ACORN Housing to expand its foreclosure prevention program. Nationwide, ACORN Housing aims to save 25,000 families from the fate of foreclosure in 2008.
.................
Yeah White will grease the skids for SEIU and ACORN to get a foothold in TEXAS.
NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting info in your link. The sad thing is a lot of others including ISDs, etc maybe in the same boat or rapidly approaching it.
How, by acting like conservatives don't exist and ignoring them except for occasional cheap shots? Like the genius in the White House?
Do you honestly think White gives a democRATS behind about this facility.
THIS IS PURE POLITICAL COVER FOR MAYOR ACORN.
Houston PING.
I thought the talk was that he’d been planning for a run for the Senate.
So does this mean he’s just like Chris Bell- a career politician willing to take any office he can get over our miserable lives?
For those outside of Houston or those who want a refresher on Bill White’s policies and agenda items:

White has to win the primary first. Against Democrat Kinky Friedman.
All I know is that he’s yet another Houston Mayor who didn’t give a damn about this town long term. He’s a carpet bagger who blew through town on a return trip from Washington DC like Mayor Brown before him.
