CIA goes hiring in heart of Arab America

Fri Nov 27, 2009 10:43am EST

By Soyoung Kim

DEARBORN, Michigan (Reuters) - At Tuhama's Lebanese deli in Dearborn, and at bakeries and barbershops throughout town, it's no secret the CIA is looking for a few good spies.

"There is a lot of talk, and nobody likes it," said Hamze Chehade, a 48-year-old Lebanese-American, taking a bite of his chicken shawarma.

In dire need of agents fluent in Arabic, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency has made an unusual public show of its recruiting effort in Dearborn -- a city of 100,000 with the densest Arab population in the United States.

The agency has bought full-page ads in Arabic-language newspapers and it is rolling out TV ads aimed at luring Arab-Americans and Iranian-Americans to spycraft.

But despite a weak economy and high unemployment, the CIA will find it hard to hire here, residents say. Many see U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East as misguided and anger over the perceived mistreatment of Arab-Americans runs deep.

A full page recruiting ad from the CIA is seen in 'The Arab American News' newspaper in Dearborn, Michigan, November 25, 2009.

Classic case of inviting the fox into the hen house.

The CIA has a long history of bungled intel and ops because of inability to speak local languages.

Then there is the story about how the CIA would not hire middle east Jews as Arabists because they could not verify backgrounds. Of course they verified Hansen's background, so that tells you what that is worth.

Its a complex world, but deliberate ignorance is not a solution.

Recruiting anything pro-American in Dearborn (aka Hezbullahstan) is like trying to recruit an ice-cube in hell.

They should be recruiting Arab-American Christians, not Muslims! There are plenty to Antiochian Orthodox and Maronite Catholics in this country.

Of course Hansen was FBI. What does that have to do with anything? Hint, the FBI does the security background checks for security clearances. The FBI cleared their own man, Hansen.

Now, why don't you try to get your facts straight.

Your previous post implied Hansen was vetted by CIA.
CIA & FBI are two very different organizations.

I did not imply anything. You leaped to a conclusion. The FBI does background checks for the WHOLE US government. Get it. It is called a background investigation, by the way.

Of course suffering from Obamatitis not only did you leap to a conclusion, but you also failed to think, and missed the more important point, which is that clearance by checklist and automatic formula does not work.

And, if you think the CIA is some how some sort of stellar agency because it is really super top secret, you are wrong. They have made some abysmal blunders [missing the fall of the Shah and the fall of the Soviet Union, to mention two very prominent ones.]

I presume that the real problem is that you are way out of your league on this issue, are trying to make snide remarks about recruiting Arabists (who happen to be Arab as it turns out) and think that being really dumb in a cute fashion is a way to bolster national security.

Not having speakers of local languages has been the American and CIA downfall since the end of WWII. Sure you cannot immediately trust a translator recruited from this group. But no intelligence is a much worse fate. If you have intelligence then you have multiple sources of intelligence, and you can cross compare. Keeping one source from knowing about the other source is one of the reasons you "compartment" information. The CIA compartments information all of the time. Sometimes that creates its own problems.
