New Zealand’s NIWA scientists accused of CRU-style fudging of data
Flopping Aces ^ | 11-26-09 | Mataharley

"Warmists" have room to celebrate... in an ironic sort of way. "Man-made" global warming indeed appears to have been confirmed. As put so indelicately to the "warmist" ears in a paper released yesterday by Climate Science Coalition:

We have discovered that the warming in New Zealand over the past 156 years was indeed man-made, but it had nothing to do with emissions of CO2—it was created by man-made adjustments of the temperature. It’s a disgrace.

Yes, folks... in addition to the unintended and embarrassing release of internal emails and data from CRU discussing their deliberate data manipulation to "hide the decline" of temperatures over the past weekend, now there is a second climate change group - NIWA (New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) - under assault for manipulating temperature measurements.

iwishart over at TBR.cc has the latest breaking news.

The New Zealand Government's chief climate advisory unit NIWA is under fire for allegedly massaging raw climate data to show a global warming trend that wasn't there.

The scandal breaks as fears grow worldwide that corruption of climate science is not confined to just Britain's CRU climate research centre.

In New Zealand's case, the figures published on NIWA's [the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric research] website suggest a strong warming trend in New Zealand over the past century:

NZ NIWA graph adjusted

The caption to the photo on the NiWA site reads:

From NIWA's web site — Figure 7: Mean annual temperature over New Zealand, from 1853 to 2008 inclusive, based on

between 2 (from 1853) and 7 (from 1908) long-term station records. The blue and red bars show annual differences from the

1971 – 2000 average, the solid black line is a smoothed time series, and the dotted [straight] line is the linear trend over 1909 to 2008 (0.92°C/100 years).

Shall we have a look at the raw data, pooh pooh'ed as so irrelevant by the warmist crowd?

NZ NIWA graph raw data

This picture of actual temperatures whistles a different tune altogether.

Excellent, we need to expose as much as we can before they try and pass cap and trade.

No doubt there's a report on the glaciers that says they're all disappearing.

Watch for this sort of thing closely. New Zealand has mountains with glaciers. If there's a change in the relatively local climate that brings in cold, dry air, the glaciers will tend to disappear due to the loss of additional snowfall. If the weather were getting warmer, there'd be more snowfall at the higher elevations (where it's always colder than at sea level), and the glaciers would increase in size.

Colder, dryer air also brings with it dramatic downpours, but only at the margins of the weather systems. The result is reduced rainfall and desertification. Warmer, wetter air, always means more rain over a broad area.

In some parts of the world surface evaporation provides moisture to the part of mountains lying above the normal cloud cover. Kilamanjaro is such a mountain and its glaciers depend on moisture laden winds blowing up from the plains below. The glaciers there have been disappearing due to a loss of moisture on the plains, and that has been brought about by cool, dry air. If Kenya had more warm, moist air, there'd be plenty of water to keep the glaciers going.

In fact, all over the world wherever mountain glaciers are disappearing it's not because they are "melting". The local temperatures in the vicinity of those glaciers continues to be below freezing most of the year.

What's missing are warm, moist winds. What they've got are cool, dry winds.

The Earth is obviously moving into the next cycle of its normal Glacial condition.

The Global Warming crowd avoid dealing with the question of the settled science regarding the relative effects of cool, dry and warm, moist winds over large areas.

It's possible they are not sufficiently trained in their field to comprehend the water cycle.

Wow. A whole second, and separate, scandal broken by whistleblowers.

How long can the MSM sit on this? Especially when congress was not especially eager to pass a massive trillion dollar tax-and-spend on Americans, most of which would not even be available to them as pork.

Let’s not forget that when Al Gore signed the Kyoto Treaty, it wasn’t George Bush who killed it. The Senate under bill clinton voted 95-5 against confirming it. Bush just put the last nail in the Kyoto coffin.

“it was created by man-made adjustments of the temperature.”

Great line.
Perfect short discription of what has been happening.

When they address adjustments for ‘siting’ or urban heat island the adjustments should cause a lowering of the adjusted temperature over time. Oh, wait, these adjustments lower early temperatures and raise later ones. This is EXACTLY the opposite of what should have occurred if adjustments were necessary.

NZ glaciers still shrinking — NIWA

Now how'd I know there'd be a glacier study ~ BTW, they named several reasons a mountain glacier might grow smaller.

They did not mention that there's a constant sublimation rate (depending, of course, on the average air pressure at a given elevation), and they didn't tell us what particular factor was more important.

With Antarctic ice range increasing, all that humidity that's supposed to be in those warm, moist winds is going somewhere ~ and it's not toward the Equatorial latitudes Fur Shur.

New Zealand is rapidly heading into severe drought country down the road if the warm, moist winds don't come back.

The kiwi is doomed!~

I got an email today from Nicky Wagner, a National MP from Christchurch. It was telling us that climate change was the most important issue our Nation faces &tc.

I sent a terse response back advising that IMO it was a hoax, rather like Y2K, and that National had no business keeping us signed to the Kyoto Protocol.

Dunno if I will get a response...

(DHTH looks outside... the rain has now stopped and it looks like a nice day is on its way to Auckland. Just dam’n.)

Yes, a "man made disaster" ~ which means this involved TERRORISTS!

Maybe we should drag them from their hovels and be abusive to them.

Hey interestingly, my boss at work (an engineer) is perhaps the number boss of the big O of America I have seen, and yet if you ask him about his personal stance towards manmade climate change, he is well to the right of Rodney Hide.
