Does Lou Dobbs now support amnesty? Well, yes and no: see what he said.

Per the WSJ (link), bolding added:

(Lou Dobbs) is working to repair what a spokesman conceded is a glaring flaw: His reputation for antipathy toward Latino immigrants. In a little-noticed interview Friday, Mr. Dobbs told Spanish-language network Telemundo he now supports a plan to legalize millions of undocumented workers, a stance he long lambasted as an unfair "amnesty."

Now, to help illustrate why Wallsten is being misleading, here's what Dobbs said (video here, bolding added):

What I have said from the very beginning... which a lot of people have chosen to ignore: that we need a rational, effective, humane immigration policy in this country... we need the ability to legalize illegal immigrants on certain conditions and we need to be able to influence the direction of the conversation right now toward securing the border because until we can control immigration we cannot meaningfully, subtantively alter immigration law because it would have no point if we cannot establish the basis for the control of the flow of people across that border.

[What Dobbs has said in the past, what else he said in the interview, and the suggested position for amnesty opponents at the link]

What I don’t understand is why liberals talk about these illegal aliens (they are NOT immigrants!) like they’re all fleeing from some terrible peril to which their return would mean certain death. Last I knew, there are no pogroms occurring in Mexico, the Caribe, and Central and South America.

Thanks for posting this -- I was afraid it would get lost in the holiday rush.

All I will add is that if Dobbs is serious about running against Menendez for Senate in New Jersey, his amnesty stance is going to be a huge problem. Dobbs would have a better chance running against Lautenberg (or for an open seat should Lautenberg retire), but that means waiting -- and Dobbs is about 70 now, although he's still young than Lautenberg.

It occurs to me that the original 'Reconquista' was when Spain drove the muslim INVADERS out of their country in 1492.

From what is in that article, I don’t think I would trust Lou Dobbs in the Senate. Amnesty for illegals, no matter what hoops it makes them go through is simply a scheme to add enough Democrat voters to make the US a permanent one-party State with the Republicans or perhaps a congeries of other little parties relegated to fighting school board elections for a few years until the Party decides they are no longer useful.

Lou Dobbs is 64, born September 24, 1945, in the little state of Texas.

Lautenberg born January 23, 1924

I agree. As soon as political office becomes part of the equation, they start parsing their words so as not to offend either side. It's like a mental illness. Lou just needs to retire, and enjoy the money he made talking to a camera.

It's easy to be "principled" when you have a seven-figure income rolling in every year.

It's easy to become unprincipled when you are looking for a way to replace your lost seven-figure income.

Funny, that's the exact same position Bush had when he was lambasted for being soft on illegal immigrants by Dobbs and his ilk.

You are correct: Dobbs is only 64. So if he did wait to run for Lautenberg's seat in 2014, Dobbs would be about 69/70. Of course, Lautenberg would be closing in on 90!

Thanks for the info...

Whether Dobb’s runs for Senate or not, there is this added consideration: Gov Corzine was just voted out of office. Before Christie takes office, Lautenberg can retire. As Governer, Corzine can appoint himself to the vacant Senate seat, then the Lieutenant Governor takes Corzine’s vacant seat until Christie’s swearing in. NJ will then have Corzine until 2014, but now even closer to Obama.

This is my NJ! Aint it great?

I agree.

Lou Dobbs is no different from any other politician. To get elected they will promise everything. He wants lawful immigration for the illegals, and amnesty to the ones that are here already, but I think out country is filled to the brim now. We can’t keep our own people working. He has certainly changed his tune.

No, it is not. And Dobbs never called people who wanted the border controlled ‘vigilantes’ like Bush did.
