Do you think McDonnell campaigned as a moderate? He repeatedly said he was pro-life, would govern pro-life, then turned the topic back to jobs. His ads were hard hitting on various energy sources and cap-and-trade and against Washington. He appeared firm to me, yet able to pull the swing voters in. That’s why he won with such a wide margin.

I don't know how you conclude Gov-elect McDonnell is a "moderate RINO". He's pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, supports drilling offshore, supports lower taxes and defines marriage as between one man and one woman.

What McDonnell showed is that conservatives can win and win big if they campaign on issues most people are worried about. Those issues in Virginia are jobs, transportation, and energy. McDonnell didn't hide from his record as a social conservative, but by focusing on what was important to most voters he shellacked an opponent whose entire campaign strategy was negative ads attacking McDonnell for being a conservative.
