CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Hugo Chavez is defending alleged terrorist mastermind Carlos the Jackal, saying the Venezuelan imprisoned in France was a "revolutionary fighter" rather than a terrorist.

The Venezuelan president praised Carlos—whose real name is Ilich Sanchez Ramirez—during a speech Friday night saying: "I defend him. It doesn't matter to me what they say tomorrow in Europe."

Ramirez gained international notoriety during the 1970s and 80s as the alleged mastermind of deadly bombings, killings and hostage dramas. He is serving a life sentence in France for the 1975 murders of two French secret agents and an alleged informant.

"They accuse him of being a terrorist, but Carlos really was a revolutionary fighter,"

Carlos is reported to have converted to Islam. In June 2003, Revolutionary Islam, a book “compiled and edited by a French journalist, Jean-Michel Vernochet, on the basis of letters, interviews and texts” by Carlos, went on sale.[15] In it Carlos praises Osama bin Laden and the September 11 attacks and advocates Revolutionary Islam as a “new, post-Communist answer to what he calls US `totalitarianism`”, telling readers “from now on terrorism is going to be more or less a daily part of the landscape of your rotting democracies.”

Any doubt about left about how the left/islam go together so well?

Chavez rather famously wrote a love letter to Carlos when he first entered the presidency, and ordered his ambassador to see to his needs.

I hate to hear people say not to execute people like “The Jackal” and KSM.

These people sentenced to life have every reason to believe that some day some strange quirk may happen to set them free.

Oce dead, they are dead. You can call them martyrs if you like ,dead martyrs.

Better a dead Martyr than a live POS turned loose by some crazy loon like Chavez. Better if they had executed the clown that got set free in Scotland.

"In his speech late on Friday in Caracas, Mr Chavez said: "I defend him. It doesn't matter to me what they say tomorrow in Europe."

He said he believed Carlos had been unfairly convicted, and called him "one of the great fighters of the Palestine Liberation Organisation".

The Venezuelan leader has previously called Carlos a friend, and is reported to have exchanged letters with him in the past.

In his speech, Mr Chavez also described Presidents Mugabe and Ahmadinejad - who like Mr Chavez are strong critics of the US - as brothers."

Chavez doesn't even have to worry about how his support for known terrorists looks in the Venezuelan press. If they disagree ... he just sends in troops and shuts them down. The parallels here for the American press aren't far behind. I'm reminded of the war on FoxNews by the Obama administration.

Dissent is patriotic ... but only for dictators and the far left.
