I wonder if you look at Amazon’s shipments, what are the numbers shipping to SF area. I think these folks are cutting their own throat, passing on stocking a super-mega best seller.. just stupid. But it doesn’t stop one person from getting their copy.. just throws away their profits. What a wonderful world.
Having been involved in the bookstore business, I can tell you that having an attitude like that will alienate many customers. This is the same liberal attitude that is more interested in calling people with whom you disagree stupid, than it is in arguing the issues about which you disagree.
If I have a choice of clicking a few keys to order the book I want, or enduring the scorn of clerks like these, guess which place will get my order.
Maybe we should overcome this and just march in there and buy or order the book and make these folks grin and bear it.
This article is just a hit piece. Saying that chains are discounting the book due to slow sales is wrong and they know it. Chain store prices are not set at the local level. All bestsellers are discounted and extremely popular books are used as loss leaders. The author of this piece needs a crash course in capitalism.
