China not needed in South Asia, angry India tells US

New Delhi: Angered by US President Barack Obama’s attempt to envisage a role for China in South Asia, India on Wednesday made it clear that it objects any move to give a wider footprint to China in the region.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that it had objections to Obama giving China a greater role in South Asian affairs, adding a third country’s role cannot be envisaged in the bilateral relationships between countries of the region.

The MEA further said a role for a third country in the region was not necessary and India was committed to resolving all issues with Pakistan bilaterally.

The US and China had yesterday voiced support for the improvement in Indo-Pak ties and their readiness to promote peace and stability in the region.

A joint statement issued at the conclusion of Obama's talks with his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao in Beijing listed the situation in South Asia among regional and global challenges.

The two countries “support the efforts of Afghanistan and Pakistan to fight terrorism, maintain domestic stability and achieve sustainable economic and social development, and support the improvement and growth of relations between India and Pakistan”, the joint statement said.

“The two sides are ready to strengthen communication, dialogue and cooperation on issues related to South Asia and work together to promote peace, stability and development in that region,” it added.

The US Ambassador to India, Timothy J Roemer today avoided responding to queries on the US-China joint statement, saying he had yet to take a close look at it.

Zero, it’s time to ‘hook up’ with former colonists. China’s not one of them. India’s a democracy with a long and proud history of British traditions as are we. They’re better educated than China and serve to buffer the troublesome nations of China, Pakistan and Afghanistan and a hostile Islamic world in general. So much to turn back when you’re impeached, asked to step down or thrown out of office with an overwhelming vote against you and your damage done to this great country.

Dang, this dude is on a losing streak when it comes to foreign relations.

It’s so laughable to consider the claims made about Bush alienating other countries.

I dont believe this. President Bush made every attempt to develop the fledgeling relationship with India, and enhance it for the simple reason that he knew that some day we will be fighting the Chinese menace, and we need all the help we can get.

Barry “Fanboy” Bowbama goes and wants China to take a hand in the Indo-PAk “Peace” process?!! He needs to understand that there can be no peace when one nation repeatedly grows, trains, and unleashes terrorists on the other.

And China helping India and Pakistan? Talk about the wolf guarding the sheep.

Barry is clueless.

I don’t agree with BHO’s approach, but the strategic reality on the ground is that any one of China’s 3 fleets are stronger than the entire Indian Navy. Moreover, China seems to have military bases and/or alliances with all the countries in South Asia around India.

So whether we like it or not, China already has a strong influence in that region.

On what have you based this strategic assessment?

1. India has an aircraft carrier (Old, but there are more on the way), CHina does not.

2. India’s fleet is more up to date, and better armed.

3. The Indian Navy has greater expertise in offshore operations.

4. India’s submarine fleet (though D-E), is more advanced than the CHinese.

So how are the chinese fleets better?

India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran all have observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization with both Pak and Iran being considered for full membership.

Gentleman, you are both wrong.

My Oztrich Boy Unpatent Fleet Analayser rates the Chinese Fleet at equal second with Russia. Japan fourth. India equal fifth with Britian and France

Chinese ships don't rate as highly, but there are more of them. And China has clear leads in Submarines, Fast/Light Attack craft (probarly not that significant unless India intends invading China), and Amphibious ships (OK scratch the invasion).

But India has the experience of having had a balanced fleet of state of the art ships for the past 50 years, while China was on the growth curve of Light forces>50's standard Soviet>contemporary

On what have you based this strategic assessment?

1. India has an aircraft carrier (Old, but there are more on the way), CHina does not.

The current Indian Carrier is still in re-fit(as in not deployed) and it only has 14 obsolescent harriers due to lack of spare parts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_carrier#India

2. India’s fleet is more up to date, and better armed.

Not in terms of Fleet Air Defense (No Aegis style air-defense ships in IN, 5 of them in PLAN)
Not in terms of C4I (No AWACs or advanced Global Hawk style Drones or significant Space Assets for early detection of enemy fleets)
Not in terms of number and quality of maritime strike aircraft
Not in terms of ASW technologies.
Not in terms of overall numbers.

3. The Indian Navy has greater expertise in offshore operations.

This is likely the case.

4. India’s submarine fleet (though D-E), is more advanced than the CHinese.

China’s Kilos and Yuans are AIP enabled, Indian Kilos are not.

China has 4 times as many Submarines as India.

China has 9 nuclear SSNs and SSBNs commissioned, India has 1 under construction.

So how are the chinese fleets better?

Pretty obvious.

Ouch! Isn’t India due to visit Washington DC soon for some big deal type of thing? I thought I saw it in a newspaper somewhere. A deal like this can’t possibly go over well. As an aside, I know an awful lot of Indians who voted for BO.
