He's been stiffing his audiences for years.

I bought a ticket back when he was still Cat Stevens, and he bailed on the concert.

Claimed he hurt his hand.

"Purist", fundamentalist islamists indeed are opposed to any form of music (other than koran verses etc.) For example the Ayatollah Khomeini on the Shia side (although he didn't succeed in forbidding music altogether) and Wahhabists, like the Taliban on the Sunni side.

However there is plenty of music and singing (male and female) of all kinds and variety in the islamic world. It's one thing what normative purist islam or islamist fanatics say or want, and another what normality is in muslim societies. The radical nuts may hate music&song, but that doesn't stop the majority from hearing or playing traditional or Western music.

However considering that Cat Stev... eh Yussuf Islam, is a supposedly fundamentalist Sunni, he is hypocritical in playing his Western entertainment music. Fellow radicals would frown upon that for sure.

I’d say anyone who pays to hear an islamist sing deserves to be defrauded.

caught the 70’s flick Mother Jugs and Speed on Fox Movie Channel last night. So wonderfully dated at this point.
Harvey Keitel tries to convince Raquel Welsch to go out with him by offering her tickets to the Cat Stevens concert.
Did that ever actually work??

Later he propositions her to move in with him by handing her his apartment key, telling him how he like his lamb chops cooked, where his laundry is and directions to the laundromat. Not to mention everyone kept calling her Jugs and telling her that her place was at the Reception Desk and not in an ambulance.

Also I noticed Bill Cosby openly using the term Chinaman.
Less than a decade later it would get Morton Downey, Jr. fired.

That's pretty disappointing about Cat Stevens. FWIW, according to Wiki sources he claims his quotes were taken out of context and he never supported the fatwa. I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt, he was a man of peace in his youth, but your quotes indicate he was spouting hateful rhetoric.

On the issue of the 9/11 horror I found the following:

"I wish to express my heartfelt horror at the indiscriminate terrorist attacks committed against innocent people of the United States," Islam wrote on his official Web site. In his statement, Islam emphasized that the terrorists' actions contradict the peaceful teachings of Islam. "No right-thinking follower of Islam could possibly condone such an action," he wrote. "The Quran equates the murder of one innocent person with the murder of the whole of humanity."

Islam said his thoughts are with the victims and their families, and he stressed that most Muslims share his views.
