Pirates seize N Korea tanker crew
bbc ^

Posted on 11/17/2009 3:22:14 AM PST by darkside321

A chemical tanker with a crew of 28 North Koreans has been hijacked by pirates near Somalia, the European Union's naval force says.

The MV Theresa VIII, a Singaporean-operated tanker, was taken on Monday in the south Somali Basin, 180 nautical miles north west of the Seychelles.

The vessel had been heading for the Kenyan port city of Mombasa, but was diverted north, the naval force said.

The EU naval force (Navfor) operates in the region to protect shipping.

Somali pirates, using "mother ships" to launch their small-boat attacks on vessels, have extended their range to an area off the Seychelles in recent months in order to evade the navies patrolling the Horn of Africa.

The MV Theresa VIII, the owner of which is based in the Virgin Islands, is a tanker of 22,294 deadweight tonnes, Navfor said.

It has emerged that guards aboard a Ukrainian cargo ship, the MV Lady Juliet, successfully fought off pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Monday.

Pirates firing Kalashnikov assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades approached the vessel from their mother ship but came under return fire from a Navfor detachment protecting the ship.

Navfor supplies vulnerable ships with so-called vessel protection detachments, under certain circumstances.

Nobody was hurt aboard the Lady Juliet, which bears a St Vincent and The Grenadines flag, and any casualties among the pirates could not be confirmed.

"A chemical tanker with a crew of 28 North Koreans has been hijacked by pirates near Somalia, the European Union's naval force says."

The imbeciles are at it again.
Only this time it isn't a polite nation's property they've stolen.
The property belongs to an animal every bit as animalistic as themselves.

The potential for great fun is quite high. LOL

I’m starting to like these guys. It’s like when Greenpeace took on Soviet ‘fishing’ trawlers during the Cold War. Gutsy.

This indeed could be very interesting, which country will send out Special Forces to take back the tanker is probably on all the minds of Intel Specialists.

Myself I think it will be exploded destroying the tanker, its cargo and its crew.

Dead men tell no tales.

Or this (maybe tin-foil hat material).....

Somali Pirates hired by AQ to bring in deadly cargo NK ship is delivering. Make it look like piracy, grab the bad cargo (chem weapons, arms, counterfeit cash, drugs), deliver it to AQ and then have a sudden change of heart and release the ship and crew...

Just sayin....

Neah.
Unfortunately (in this case), the Norks don’t have any potential for “power projection.”

I honestly wonder how the world community would react if one or more NK ships were dispatched to the area so this matter could, ahhhh, be resolved?
Bet'chu NK would meet no resistance, whatsoever.

OTOH you may be correct.

But think of it: thug wannabes meeting the ultimate thug. >Shazam!<
It'd be glorious, LR. LOL!!

I would be greatly amused if the Norks landed a force in Somalia and attacked the pirates. Huge casualties and lots of collateral damage would be nice, too. Dead commies, dead pirates, whats not to cheer for?
