Metro columnist Dan Casey: Fight to expand gun rights is far from over(VA)

This is a big week for the Virginia Tech chapter of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus.

It's Defense Education Week, and the student group, which has 100 to 200 members, has organized a week's worth of seminars and gatherings in support of concealed carry on Virginia college campuses.

Monday night's featured speaker was Philip Van Cleave, president of the pro-gun Virginia Citizens Defense League.

Earlier Monday, I spoke to Ken Stanton, 32, a serious-sounding engineering graduate student and the vice president of the Virginia Tech chapter of the concealed carry group.

Here's his argument in favor of guns on campus:

"We've had a couple years since April 16 to discuss this issue, to do research, to discuss this with legislators," Stanton told me. "We have not found a single argument that says we should not allow it."

Stanton's chief contention is a familiar one: Law-abiding handgun permit holders should have the right to defend themselves from gun-toting bad guys.

Right now at Virginia Tech, where guns are banned, "We have no chance. We literally are sitting ducks. We're seeing way too much evidence of that," Stanton said.

Though his argument sounds simple, it has some interesting implications.

You see, since the 1990s, the National Rifle Association has been wildly successful in expanding concealed carry permit laws in states across the country.

Now, 46 states issue concealed carry permits to law-abiding citizens. Only two states, Wisconsin and Illinois, have blanket prohibitions against concealed carry. It's legal in Vermont and Alaska without permits.

But many of those states have various exceptions where concealed handguns are prohibited. Those include college campuses, schools, sports arenas, government buildings and churches.

Doesn’t this moron (Casey) work for the same anti-gun paper that published the names and addresses of all of the concealed carry holders in the area a couple of years ago?

Just one teacher with a pistol might have been able to stop the tragedy at Columbine High School, you know?

Yes, Dan. We know.

Answering my own question: Yes. This is the same paper that published the list of concealed carry holders in 2007. As it turns out the @$$hole, Christian Trejbal, who did that got really upset when his address was published

Casey was the same dimwit that attacked Ken Cuccinelli for making it easier to get concealed-carry permits. That should tell you where his politics are....

and YES, the liberal Roanoke Times was the paper that published the names of Concealed-Carry permit holders, thus endangering many people.

Just one teacher with a pistol might have been able to stop the tragedy at Columbine High School, you know?

And one teacher or student with a gun at Tech could have stopped that shooter.

And one soldier with a gun at Fort Hood in the training center could have stopped THAT shooter.

From the AP:

Smith poked his head over the cubicle's partition and saw an extraordinary sight: An Army officer with two guns, firing into the crowded room. [in a gun-free zone!!! HOW COULD THAT HAPPEN?]

The 21-year-old Fort Worth native quickly grabbed the civilian worker who'd been helping with his paperwork and forced her under the desk. He lay low for several minutes, waiting for the shooter to run out of ammunition and wishing he, too, had a gun.

...

Around 1:30 p.m., witnesses say a man later identified as Hasan jumped up on a desk and shouted the words "Allahu Akbar!" — Arabic for "God is great!" He was armed with two pistols, one a semiautomatic capable of firing up to 20 rounds without reloading.

Packed into cubicles with 5-foot-high dividers, the 300 unarmed soldiers were sitting ducks. Those who weren't hit by direct fire were struck by rounds ricocheting off the desks and tile floor.

Two years after the VT tragedy, we have learned NOTHING. At Fort Hood, 300 people TRAINED IN WEAPONS HANDLING AND FIRE, and trusted to use weapons for the good of our country, were forced by federal and local laws to sit, unarmed, while a shooter killed them at will.

And just like VT, the argument made by the stupid liberals is that we have to do MORE to keep guns out of the hands of good people, in the bizarre belief that this will somehow keep the bad people from getting guns.

We can't keep Iran and North Korea from getting NUCLEAR WEAPONS, but we think we can somehow prevent every bad person in the country from getting a gun and some ammo.

What was the incident down south where a teacher stopped a school shooting by running out to his car and grabing his gun?

Alleged home invader shot dead by resident on SW Side
CHICAGO

November 10, 2009

Sun-Times Media Wire

An armed man who allegedly broke into a home dropped his gun and was shot dead by a resident who used the weapon on him Monday afternoon near the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The shooting occurred about 4 p.m. on the 2100 block of South California Avenue, according to police who said the man killed had allegedly had broken into an occupied home, accidentally dropped a weapon and resident picked it up and fired at him.

Carlos Plascencia, 36, of the 2300 block of South Whipple Street was shot at the California Avenue address and was dead on the scene, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police are reportedly interviewing a person who allegedly broke in with Plascencia, and also the resident who fired the weapon.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Tuesday.

Harrison Area detectives are investigating
