WICHITA | Scott Roeder has confessed to the shooting of a Kansas abortion provider.
The 51-year-old Kansas City man told The Associated Press in a telephone call from jail Monday that he plans to use the so-called necessity defense at his trial.
Roeder contends the killing of George Tiller in May at a Wichita church was justified to protect the lives of unborn children.
His confession comes as abortion opponents across the nation release a new Defensive Action Statement arguing for the same force to protect the unborn as is justified to protect born children. The 21 signers want jurors to be allowed to consider that defense at Roeders Jan. 11 trial.

Will he claim he was under “stress” or that he was “picked on?”
(sarcasm)
His motives remain so mysterious. I wonder if he caught secondary PTSD from soldiers, or maybe he was called a rude name by somebody once.
Killing the unborn is horrible as well and needs to change.
I know this may be controversial, but I believe that his actions have already saved numerous lives.
While I am personally opposed to killing abortion doctors, I don’t think it is right to impose my beliefs on others.
May Tiller the Butcher find rest by the fire.
Eric Rudolph supports this guy. Rudolph bombed the Atlanta Olympics.
Well, I am sure this is about his legal defense, but, I do find it interesting that the folks who have killed on behalf of the life of the unborn child have a way into the discussion.
This country is moving towards “life” it is slow but it is finally realizing that the unborn are in fact innocent and should be protected.
Just a case of Pre-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
“Rudolph bombed the Atlanta Olympics”
Haven’t there been a couple of such “bombs” in NY planted by leftists over the last 24 months and they have attracted virtually ZERO attention.
They have been treated like “oh well, just little bombs, no real harm done”.
The left will rush to condemn him and call it Christofascism. They will demand investigations on anyone who belongs to Christianity and/or goes to Church on Sunday. All Christian preachers and ministers will be investigated for inciting members to murder.
Meanwhile, the left will give a free pass to all members of a middle eastern death cult who go to indoctrination meetings on Friday. All cult leaders who tell their congregations that Christians and Jews are pigs and dogs will get a free exemption from prosecution.
Can you imagine the controversy of a hung jury in which one holdout refuses to convict him? The questioning of potential jurors should be interesting.
That’s not just a defense but the reason ... he didn’t kill Tiller to punish him but to STOP him.
No controversy. Just a statement of fact.
Wow, what timing!
Are they attempting to compare the assassinations of the soldiers to Tiller’s?
Well said.
That is actually an excellent point, that I had not considered, as a current Kansas resident Roeder hasn’t been in the news of late, so I will watch what the coverage is tonight and whether your point is addressed.
Yes, he did do the bombing, but, he also first went after abortion clinics, what moved him to the Atlanta Olympic bombing hasn’t been stated but he felt abortion docs were wrong and bombed their buildings. Again, both are wrong, but why he moved to Atlanta I have not heard a clear reason.
Whenever the “saving lives” defense has been tried before regarding breaking the law, it has always been struck down by the judge before it could even be presented. I expect the same to happen here. The jury won’t be allowed to consider this defense.
President Obama condemned the Tiller murder the day it happened. Did Barack include a condemnation of the muslim shooter along with his stated sympathies for the shooting victims in the speech he gave Thursday (he also had some shout outs for unrelated events and people)?
Or was that part of his “let’s not rush to judgement” remark?
Even without knowing specifically WHY he did it, was there even a comment that it was WRONG for him to lash out against his fellow soldiers that way?
I don't know.
The leftists who had firebombs and planned to use them while at the RNC Convention in 2008 were prosecuted and convicted all with NO media spotlight (it was strictly covered as a local story, no wire service coverage).
There was also prosecution and conviction of those who plotted to kidnap Republican delegates at the 2008 convention. Again with NO national news attention.
The Pravda Media lies by omission.
Just think how many more lives could be saved if more doctors were shot - you want to issue a “clarion call” for that?
I’m appalled that people are finding reasons to justify first degree murder or show casual acceptance of it: “I don’t have a problem with it.”
That isn’t the way to stop abortion, waiting for schizophrenic losers off their meds to go shootin’. That’s not a sign of how strong the movement is, but how weak.
Bill Ayers bombed the Pentagon. Let's not be judgmental about bombers.
No question that Roeder stopped or at least delayed the abortions scheduled to be committed by Tiller. It is conceivable that at least some of the so-called mothers reconsidered or simply could not find another abortionist.
I wish Roeder luck with this strategy.
Unfortunately, less immediate effects of the Tiller assassination are not all salutary. Pro-life movement as a whole, for example, will have to defend itself against accusations of lawlessness.
Further, targeted assassinations like that are simply not a workable strategy. The abortionist is a hired hand. The principal murderer in an abortion is the “mother”. Effective defense of the unborn is therefore in contradicting the culture of death that the government promulgates, and in reaching out to the mothers. Outlawing abortion and punishing the abortionists is, of course, an enduring goal, but the focus on the abortionists as the principle evil is misguided.

He should plead guilty, period. He did what he did and he had his reasons, not he needs to plead guilty and ask for no quarter from the justice system.
While I am personally opposed to killing abortion doctors, I dont think it is right to impose my beliefs on others.
The saddest thing about that statement is that it is too long for a bumper sticker.
You provide concise thoughts on this subject, in particular the after shock for the pro life movement, who do not support the action’s of a person breaking the law to prove a point, in particular murder.
Did the action’s save the unborn, I would think so, of course if one wants that service they can find another clinic.
To remind society that abortions while legal are taking of innocent lives, and that should be done in a legal and thoughtful manner.
The goal should be about changing the laws, and then when laws are broken hold those accountable.
I don’t remember Big Sis coming out and warning the The Pro-abortionists about backlash against Pro-lifers...
But she is doing it with the Muslim Terrorist Hasan, Our country is imploding.
Yep, liberals hate having their idiotic “logic” turned around on them.
“While I am personally opposed to killing abortion doctors, I dont think it is right to impose my beliefs on others.”
I think the official, gold-embossed invitation to chaos and anarchy was the Roe v. Wade decision. Now all three branches of government feel free to ignore the law of the land on a daily basis. Actions have consequences.
Claiming to know the mind of God is a bit presumtuous, don't you think? "Thou shall not kill" doesn't leave room for exceptions, mortal.
You mean a jury of his peers which should be 12 pro-lifers.
“abortion provider” ????
true. At this moment there’s probably cuddly babies sucking pacifiers being held in grandmother’s arms that would have been mutilated.
Meanwhile, Tiller’s body is providing nourishment to earthworms and other species useful to our ecology.
My point is God doesn’t approve of murder exactly as you stated.
I quess now the big questions will be whether a judge lets him put on this defense and if he will have a jury trial. I know if I was on this jury I would have a very hard time saying guilty.
The goal is changing the law and also changing the culture. You cannot separate the two.
If, hypothetically, abortion remained legal but American people uniformly viewed abortion as murder and abhorred it, we’d be 90% done.
< If one wants that service, they can find another clinic >
* * * * * *
There are about 500-2000 of these late term abortions, depending on how you tweak the factors. Going by Tiller’s rate, one doctor could handle that in a year, and the pro-aborts HAVE that one doctor, the one in Nebraska. Anyone here calling for shooting him?
That is the best strategy, going about it in a thoughtful manner. Otherwise you’re justifying and excusing murder with the best of them (the moral relativists).
He should have yelled “Allahu Akbar before killing.
The left would have a hard time not defending him or it would at least send them in a tailspin trying to figure out where they stand.
Why call them abortion DOCTORS? Real DOCTORS take an oath AGAINST Abortion! Let’s call these ABORTIONISTS. I remember when the US Supreme Court said you COULD NOT require Abortionists to be Doctors, because that would infringe on women’s rights to have abortions!! LOL. Unbelievable, but TRUE.
The SECULAR “Courts” do NOT want him to be able to PRESENT any defense, much less this one.
You put that VERY concisely, yet ELOQUENTLY!
They just need a lawyer to PRESENT it...MAKE the case to the jury, BEFORE being muzzled by the bailiffs and hustled off to the Democratic Gulag!
Good point! Hussein Obama’s friend!
Exodus 1:15 And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one [was] Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:
Exodus 1:17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.
Exodus 1:18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?
Exodus 1:19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women [are] not as the Egyptian women; for they [are] lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.
Exodus 1:20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.
Exodus 1:21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
How many children were saved by obedient midwives in the OT?
I don’t think there is any question that there is a deterrent effect.
“Im appalled that people are finding reasons to justify first degree murder or show casual acceptance of it: I dont have a problem with it.”
Observing the deterrent effect doesn’t necessarily mean anyone is justifying it.
I think the violence of the Earth First group against animal testing deters animal testing, too. That doesn’t mean I think they are doing a good thing.
