Thank Goodness for ‘Cop Killer’ Weapons
Pajamas Media ^ | November 8 | Bob Owens

Posted on 11/09/2009 10:17:17 AM PST by AJKauf

Authorities have identified the weapons U.S. Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan used to carry out his murderous assault at Fort Hood as a FN Five-seveN pistol and an older model Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver. Initial accounts indicated that only the Five-seveN was used. Hasan fired an estimated 100+ times in the five-minute span from the start of the shooting spree until a civilian police officer at the base put him down with four shots from her own weapon.

Thirteen died and 30 were wounded Hasan’s Nov. 5 attack. It was the worst attack ever on a stateside military base. Predictably, media in the United States and overseas have reacted with breathless horror at the news Hasan used a weapon they’ve deemed a “cop killer” and “an assault rifle that fits in your pocket.” Few things could be further from the truth.

What’s the truth? It may not come as a surprise that the media is wrong yet again, but the reason why may be surprising. Ironically, more of the wounded soldiers are possibly alive today because of Hasan’s media-hyped choice of weapons........

Good Article.

Very True.

Would have been a lot worse if he had a high cap .45 auto.

BTW, just so people know. The strip joint Hasan attended
( Stars, Killen, TX) was right next door to “Guns Galore” where he bought the 5.7 x 28mm cal FN pistol.

Hasan was a one stop shopper.

excerpt:

“The difference between a wound from a 5.7 bullet and a .45 ACP is not dissimilar to the difference between the wound from an ice pick and the wound from a sledgehammer. The ice pick will penetrate far deeper, but the sledgehammer will cause far more traumatic injuries.”

< snip >

“If the same victims had been hit with 155-180 grain .40 S&W or 185-230 grain .45ACP hollow points, their wounds would likely have been far more severe than the wounds they suffered from even a fragmenting 40 grain VMAX bullet in the most commonly available 5.7 cartridge.”

Don’t expect the “lamestream” media to get anything right about firearms. Most of them can’t tell the difference between an unfired round and a shell case.

The 5.7 x 28 round ballistics most closely resembles the .22 Magnum, a moderately powered round mainly used for varmints.

5.7 x 28-----40 gr--------1950 fps--------340 ft/lbs

.22 Magnum---40 gr--------1910 fps--------324 ft/lbs

Agreed, the .45 is one hell of a man stopper.

The FN pistol is a specialty weapon in its military configured ammo, as you know, unavailable to civilians.

Thanks for a very interesting post. It's really disturbing how many rounds this guy got off with just a pistol before he was stopped, though.

On the other hand, and without reference to the gun grabbers and their propaganda, I think he chose his weapon carefully.

I don’t know the truth of it, but earlier stories speculated that the large number of dead and wounded were partly the result of bullets going through one person and then into another.

The police woman who brought him down was shot in both legs, and the suggestion seems to be that it was the same bullet that did it.

So, penetrating rounds don’t do as much damage, but they can hit more people.

I am curious where he got these weapons. Did he just go out and buy them, or did he have some source among his terrorist connections? One story said that there were weapons of choice of Mexican drug gangs, but that may just be MSM sensationalism or ignorance. I don’t know if the authorities will tell us honestly where he got them.

We may not know for sure, but Occam’s Razor sez he, being an active soldier in good standing and one to practice with his equipment, just went out and bought it like any other citizen. A little paperwork may have been involved. There is no conceivable reason why he would _have_ to go to gangs or terrorists to get it. Note that a Ft. Hood FReeper saw him practicing with it the week before; surely he wouldn’t choose to be openly seen with contraband if it was.

And yes, the round is designed for penetration, not one-shot-stops. The FN FiveseveN is a companion piece to the full-auto FN P90. The full system is built for firing lots of tiny high-penetration rounds.

IMHO, he pretty much acted alone, save maybe a little encouragement.

The purpose of the attack was not Olympic Gold but TERRORISM.

I want to know who was his accomplice in DOD who cut his orders
to provide Hassan with a target rich unarmed environment at
Fort Hood and who advised him to use a high capacity
high rate of fire pistol ?

At the ranges he engage the targets, had he been using a .45 the death toll would be double what it is. The ice pick rounds drill nice clean holes while a .45 bludgeons a massive wound channel. The size of the wound channel determines how fast the target bleeds out. Depending on the compactness of the crowd, secondary hits are possible with either round.

He didn’t need deliberate “orders”; he was a doctor, so he worked in “target rich unarmed environments”.

He didn’t need advice on capacity/ROF; he was a soldier, so he was familiar with the pros/cons of various armaments.

People really can manage to perpetrate evil on their own without help ya know.

According to Winchester, the 7.62x25's velocity with an 85grn FMJ from an 11" test barrel (roughly the length I would expect on a submachinegun) is 1647 and energy is 514. At 50 yards, velocity is 1437 and energy is 392. There are no velocities or energies listed beyond 50 yards.

Czech loads in the Vz 52 are 1644 fps.

I am surprised by the 514 lb delivered energy spec

Maybe he just wanted to carry more rounds of ammo. A .25 pistol is easy to shoot because there’s no recoil - you are likely to hit anything you point at within 25 feet. Also, with .357 rounds, your hand goes numb after rapid-firing a few dozen rounds. This guy allegedly fired over 100 rounds of ammo in minutes. For what he set out to do, he chose the right tool. The .357 he had in his possession was probably his backup gun, in case of a jam.

Hassen was stationed at Walter Reed for years.

Are there larger target rich opportunities at
Fort Hood deployment center or Walter Reed ?
Which provides more terror ?

Is Fort Hood the largest military base of the "Great Satan" ?

Who cut his orders to be reassigned to Fort Hood ?

As a Doctor did he have advanced weapons training ?

You are correct on Evil.

Islam is a religion who worship the Evil One
where killing others is the main theme.

Wouldn't want to get shot with any of these rounds. Might have have had an even higher death toll if he had used a 9mm or 5.56 x 45.

Just waiting for the dems and msm to completely ignore the muslim/jihad connection and focus on "cop killer" ammo and high capacity pistols and magazines.

Terminal ballistics is above the pay grade of modern “journalists” ... their enlightened progressive minds are binary — Guns bad, government control good. That’s as much of a distinction as they can muster.
